The Department of Aquatic Life Medicine teaches health control of various aquatic animals and marine organisms including fish and shellfish, with various studies on the medical, pathological, diagnostic and infectious aspects of diseases of microorganisms, parasites, viruses, the environment and aquatic animals with basic studies in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, immunology, food hygiene and public health for the safe production of fisheries.

Our department nurtures intellectuals who can play important roles in the health of aquatic animals and in the improvement of public health through various academic theories and practices. Since 2004, when the National License Policy took effect, we have been responsible for undertaking the training of numerous professional aquatic disease controllers.

Types of Certified Licenses

  • Aquatic disease controllers are licenced by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Our department nurtures professionals who control and treat the diseases of various fish to provide safe fisheries through the development of fishing farms. These are professional aquatic life specialists who work to prevent the diseases of fisheries and treat them. To become an aquatic disease controller, one has to obtain a licence from the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries by passing the national examination. Admission is regulated according to fisheries development and is limited to university undergraduate students of aquatic disease-related studies.
  • Fishery farm engineers (National Technology License, Human Resources Development Service of Korea). The National Technology License is required to run fishing farms based on general knowledge on the field and its technology. This qualification can also be counted when one is applying to become a government servant.
  • Teacher’s license (secondary teacher grade 2, Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development, subject: Fisheries and Marine Life). Students of the department are able to apply for our educational courses, and can achieve the level of secondary school teacher, grade 2, after completion. Students can apply for our courses from their sophomore year, although there are only a limited number of, Places. To complete the major with more than 42 credits, students should enrol in more than five courses worth more than 14 credits, and more than 20 credits of educational courses. Students can apply for the teacher certification examination after achieving the prerequisites for a secondary school teacher, grade 2.

Possible Careers After Graduation

Intellectuals from the Department of Aquatic Life Medicine can take up jobs at aquatic animal disease treatment centers after achieving the license of aquatic disease controller. They can also be hired by national organizations under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and as government servants by the Department of Fisheries in cities and provincial bodies such as the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, National Fisheries Products Quality Inspection Service and Regional Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Office. Professionals of research centers related to fisheries can also enter farms, pharmaceutical companies, and feed companies to work in fishery disease-related areas After completing our educational course, students can become fishery high school teachers by passing an examination.
