The biotechnology area is a major aspect of the BT area, and will lead international industries in the 21st century. Most BT-related industries comprise highly valued and concentrated technology that has a significant effect on various fields such as the medical pharmaceutical industry, food industry, bioenergy and environment cleanness industry.

Biotechnology is a particularly strategic technology development area that each government of the world desires to control. The goal of the department is therefore to nurture outstanding intellectuals who can prepare for the bio industry era of the 21st century.

Accordingly, the department has established various wide curriculums based on basic research of fisheries and marine organisms and educates students in a basic knowledge of biology in order to acquire broad professional knowledge. It also allows students to choose classes on their own in order to encourage them to participate freely in classes with positive attitudes.

Our program uses and applies bio systems, including cells of micro-organisms, animals and plants, and studies basic and applied theories by teaching the basis of biochemistry, molecular generic, microorganisms and organic chemistry together with applied studies of genetic engineering, biochemistry and fermentation. Through all of these means, we are nurturing the type of professionals required for bio-technology research, bioindustry and fisheries.

Due to the completion of the Human Genomes Project, 99% of human genomes have been interpreted. The growth of this area is therefore accelerating, and biotechnology is now recognized as a high-tech field. Indeed, there are high expectations that it will play a leading role in the growth of this industry in Korea.
