’Learn 742 species of marine fishes in Korea at one view’
Professor Kim Jin-koo
A book, which has been published to quick view for 742 species of marine fishes distributed in all areas of Korea is attracting public attention. Pukyong National University’s Marine fish resources deposit registration and preservation organization (Head Kim Jin-koo, Department of Marine biology) recently published 『Distribution Map of Sea Fishes in Korean Peninsula』.This book, which covers 541 pages, is a fish-guide illustrated by the research team of Professor Kim Jin-koo of Pukyong National University, which collected 742 types of marine fish collected directly from all regions of Korea for 21 years from 1999 to 2019, or collected through cooperation with other organizations. This book is equipped with a classification system, morphological characteristics, habitat groups, maximum size, and distribution map along with photos of 742 species of marine fish in Korea, so that quick searching for fish information is available. It also provides schematic diagrams and morphological explanations for 186 families according to the upper classification. In particular, this book is characterized by specifying the name of each fish in Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese, and local name as well as North Korean language. For example, the names of North Koreans of San-galchi (Oarfish) is Kalchi-ahjaebi, and Cham-Hongeo (Mottled skate) and Heenbae-hwando Sangeo (Common thresher) are Noonganjaengyi and Gin-kkori yeowoo each. The resource status information of each fish is also included in the book. We can see that eyespot puffers are ’Critically Endangered (CR)’, whale sharks are ’Endangered (EN)’, tunas are ’Vulnerable (VU)’, white rays are ’Near Threatened(NT)’, and gizzards and large-eyed herrings are ’Least Concern(LC)’. In addition, basic information about fish, such as fish evolution, classification, body type, and sensory organs, as well as information about representative fishes in each area, and the research team’s vivid excavation sites are included at the beginning of the book so that the public can easily understand fish. <기사보기 클릭!>
