Study on heat sink production using coffee grounds
Professor Yang Hyun-kyung
Research has shown that coffee grounds can be used to make heat-sinks with excellent heat dissipation. This research, conducted by Professor Yang Hyun-Kyung (Dept. of Electrical, Electronics and Software Engineering), Pukyong National University, verified the performance by comparing and analyzing the heatsinks made with coffee grounds and commercially available heatsinks. In this study, Professor Yang made a heatsink by applying a foaming process to a slurry consisting mainly of coffee grounds. The myriad of holes in the foam (lead conductors) reduce the temperature by increasing the surface area where air can be contacted as much as possible. He applied the coffee grounds heat sink and aluminum and carbon composite heat sinks to LED luminaires, respectively, and conducted a comparative experiment on heat dissipation performance. Experimental results show that the coffee grounds heatsink showed nearly 92% performance of the aluminum heatsink and 123% compared to the carbon composite heatsink. Professor Yang recently signed a technology transfer contract with the LED light manufacturing company, which paid attention to the possibility of commercializing the heat sink manufacturing technology, and received a technology transfer fee of 50 million won. Professor Yang said, “The results showed that the coffee grounds heat sink satisfies the compressive strength, specific gravity, withstand voltage characteristics, and LED application. The coffee grounds heatsink is expected to be used for various electronic parts because of its eco-friendly materials and simple manufacturing process.” <기사보기 클릭!>
