PKNU students made a statement in 'support of Myanmar's democratic transition’

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) has taken a firm stand on the Myanmar's democratic transition.

    

The Pukyong National University Student Council Association (Chairman Cho Young-seok, 4th year in Systems Management and Engineering) issued a statement in support of Myanmar's democracy on the morning of April 2nd.

    

Pukyong National University’s student council chairman Cho Young-seok held a press conference in with Pukyong National University students and international students from Myanmar in attendance. He said, "we urge the Myanmar government to stop the indiscriminate massacres and to guarantee democracy, peace and security to the people of Myanmar."

    

He stressed, "we also live in a country with a history of resistance to democratization movements, with people risking their lives against military dictatorship. Because we know the pain of the democratization movement, we cannot and should not look away from that anymore."

    

69 students from Myanmar are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at Pukyong National University currently.

    

At the event that day, the representative for international students from Myanmar at Pukyong National University said, "the lives of international students from Myanmar who have been blocked from even receiving remittances are getting harder and harder because of the increasingly serious situation in Myanmar. We appreciate the solidarity of Pukyong National University students who understand and support our suffering."

    

Following of the statement, the Pukyong National University Student Council Association decided to hold fundraising activities to support international students from Myanmar at Pukyong National University.

    

Kim Young-mok, director of the Student Affairs office said, "the university administration office also plans to support tuition fees and living expenses for students from Myanmar studying at Pukyong National University. As students stand in solidarity to share difficulties, the university will do its best for actively supporting international students."

    

Along with this, Pukyong National University faculty and staff organizations also decided to actively engage in fundraising activities to support Myanmar students. <Pukyong Today>
