Leading the Complete Enumeration Project for Active Faults on the Korean Peninsula

Pukyong National University Industry-University Cooperation Foundation runs as an organization that conducts research on the total inspection project on the active fault of the Ministry of Public Safety and Security, where 177.5 billion won will be invested. The government is investing 175 billion won by 2041 to conduct a total survey of 450 active faults nationwide. The Ministry of Public Safety and Security, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources have invested 49.3 billion won by 2021 to conduct active fault surveys in the southeastern region, including Gyeongju, where the earthquake occurred in 2016.
The person responsible for this governmental department project is Kim Young-seok, a professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Pukyong National University. For the investigation and research of faults, the Ministry of Public Safety and Security is planning to produce maps of active faults by surveying faults nationwide in stages (up to stage 5/2041), starting with the Southeast region in stage 1 (2017-2021). The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission will re-evaluate the design criteria of nuclear power plants and the re-calculation of the maximum earthquake of nuclear power plants through close investigations about seismic centers for deep earthquakes of the 9.12 earthquake by 2021 and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources will develop research technology for Korean faults by 2019 to derive a correlation between developmental characteristics of domestic faults and earthquake occurrence. The Ministry of Public Safety and Security will produce a map of active faults nationwide through this study to relieve people's anxiety by helping clear understanding of faults, and use them as basic data when constructing industrial complexes and infrastructures, it is planned to use them as basic data, to secure common technical standards for earthquake-resistant design and to advance the national earthquake risk map. The Ministry of Public Safety and Security plans to increase the competitiveness of the country by securing advanced technology at the level of advanced countries through the development of standards and evaluation technologies for fault tectonic analysis.
After graduating from the Department of Earth System Sciences Program at Seoul National University, Professor Kim completed his master's degree at the graduate school and received his Ph.D. from the Department of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. He has been teaching at Pukyong National University since 2006.
