Developed excellent matter for 'whitening, wrinkle smoothing'
Professor Kim Hyung-rak
Professor Kim Hyung-rak (Department of Food and Nutrition), Pukyong National University, said that he has succeeded in developing and stabilizing the concentration technology of meratopinoids (MES), which uses sagahydroquinoic acid and sagaquinoic acid, which are secondary metabolites produced by Sargassum macrocarpum that grow naturally on the coast of Korea. MES is the first case to develop a material with complex functionality (whitening, wrinkle smoothing) from a single substance. Through cell culture experiments, Professor Kim revealed that MES components have the effect of improving melanin production in the skin, showing skin whitening effect, and inhibiting protein production in keratinocytes involved in wrinkle formation, thereby improving wrinkles. In 1978, a Japanese scholar discovered MES in the Gulfweed, but it is the first time that Professor Kim has molecularly identified the function of this component in the body.
Professor Kim, who majors in molecular nutrition, is considered a leader in the study of physiological activity of Gulfweed. Since 2010, he has published 25 papers of SCI as a study of physiological activity of 12 out of 28 types of Gulfweed in Korea, supported by the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) for 5 years. For the past five years since 2015, he has been immersed himself in research related to Sargassum macrocarpum as a specific marine fisheries task of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and he has registered 13 patents, including the effect of whitening and wrinkle removing of Sargassum macrocarpum. Professor Kim founded a company named 'PHYHEAL' in March 2018 after the first patent registration for MES whitening and wrinkle smoothing effect in 2015, since August 2019, MES has been popularized by the commercialization of the nano-emulsion 'SargaX' under the product name. The company has been registered as a venture company and was selected for the U-TECH VALLEY business project of Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
