불의의 사고로 2대 독자를 잃은 부모가 아들을 잊지 못해 아들이 졸업한 대학에 10년째 장학금을 기부하고 있어 화제다.
화제의 주인공은 부산 북구 덕천동에 사는 지중수 씨(71) 부부. 이 부부는 5월 7일 오전 부경대학교를 찾아 김영섭 총장에게 장학금 250만원을 전달했다.
이 장학금에는 지 씨 부부에게 하늘이 무너질 만큼 애절한 사연이 숨어있다. 지난 1999년 부경대 기계공학부를 졸업한 뒤 직장생활을 하던 아들 지영두 씨(당시 26세)가 그 해 8월 불의의 사고로 그만 세상을 떠났던 것.
2대 독자를 잃은 슬픔을 감당하지 못해 실의의 시간을 보내고 있던 지 씨 부부는 2003년 살고 있던 자신들의 아파트(당시 시가 8천5백만 원)를 부경대에 기증하기로 결심하고 이를 실천했다. 아들에게 못다 준 사랑을 아들의 후배들에게 나누어주기로 한 것.
이에 대해 지 씨는 “아들이 졸업한 부경대 학생들에게 장학금을 주면 먼저 간 아들도 좋아할 것 같아 아파트를 기부하게 됐다.”고 말했다.
부경대는 지 씨 부부의 뜻에 따라 아파트를 매각한 돈으로 ‘지영두 장학금’을 설치하고, 지 씨 아들이 공부한 기계공학부 후배 중 우수학생을 선정해 매년 장학금을 전달해왔다. 지금까지 9명의 학생이 6천2백여만 원의 장학금을 받았다.
어버이날을 하루 앞두고 이날 장학금 전달식에 참석한 지 씨 부부는 장학생으로 선발된 구배성 학생(기계공학과 3학년)으로부터 붉은 카네이션을 받고 모처럼 활짝 웃었다.
지 씨는 “이렇게 아들 후배한테서 카네이션을 받고 보니 마치 아들을 보는 것 같아 위안이 된다.”면서, “먼저 간 아들도 줄곧 장학생이었는데…”고 눈시울을 붉혔다. 지 씨는 구성배 학생에게 “젊은 시절 소중한 시간을 아껴서 부디 열심히 공부하기를 바란다.”고 당부했다. 지 씨는 또 “후배들을 훌륭하게 키워준 대학에도 감사드린다.”고 말했다.
부경대는 해마다 어버이날 지 씨 부부를 초청해 카네이션을 전달하는 등 아들을 가슴에 묻은 노부부의 슬픔을 위로하기로 했다.<부경투데이>
A scholarship donated to PKNU students on Parents’ Day is preceded by a somber history.

Parents of a former student of PKNU have implemented and been generously contributing to a scholarship for the past ten years.
Mr. Ji Jung-Su(71 years old) and Mrs. are from Deokcheon-dong, Buk-gu, Busan. They visited Pukyong National University on the morning of May 7th and donated 2.5 million won to Kim Young-Seup, president of Pukyong National University.
This scholarship is preceded by a very sad story. Mr. Ji.’s son, Ji Young-Du, graduated with a major in from Pukyong National University in 1999. Sadly, he passed away in August of the same year after an accident at work.
The grief of losing their only son was devastating for Mr. Ji and Mrs. As a means of dealing with their grief, they decided to donate their apartment to Pukyong National University in 2003. At that time, the apartment was valued at 85 million won. Their decision to donate to PKNU is a way for them to substitute the love that they couldn’t give to their son, and instead assist junior PKNU students financially.
Mr. Ji and Mrs. said that they decided to donate their apartment as a scholarship for students of Pukyong National University with the belief that their son would be happy about it as a graduate of this school.
The university founded "The Ji Young-Du Scholarship" with the money from selling the apartment, and has awarded the scholarship to talented students in the department of mechanical industrial engineering where Ji Young-Du studied. Approximately 62 million won has been given to 9 students so far.
Just one day before Parents’ day, Mr. Ji and Mrs. attended the scholarship award ceremony and smiled when they were given red carnations from Gu Bae-Sung(a junior in the department of mechanical industrial engineering) who was awarded the scholarship.
"I feel like I’ve just received a carnation from my son as I received it from my son’s junior. My son was also a scholarship recipient during his time at Pukyong National University. I hope that all of the students here study hard and realise that their youth is the most valuable thing. Also, I would like to extend my thanks to Pukyong National University for helping students to reach their full potential," Mr. Ji said.
PKNU decided to invite Mr. Ji and Mrs. on Parents’ day every year to comfort them and help them put the grief of losing their son behind them.<Pukyong today>
