에티오피아 국립 아디스아바바대학교(Addis Ababa University) 화학생명공학과 교수였던 그는 지난 2014년 9월 정부초청 장학생으로 부경대 식품공학과 박사과정에 입학했다. 그는 “부경대에서 정부초청 장학생으로 공부했던 에티오피아 친구가 적극 추천해 부경대에 유학하기로 마음먹었다.”고 말했다. 그는 박사과정 3년 동안 부경대 식품공학과 식품공학실(지도교수 전병수)에서 커피 원두로부터 영양성분을 추출하는 방안 등을 연구하고 국제저널에 4편의 논문을 주저자로, 국내외 7편의 논문을 공동저자로 발표하는 등 연구 성과를 올렸다. 그가 연구한 내용은 원두에서 추출한 커피향과 커피오일 등을 캡슐화하는 방법을 비롯, 커피찌꺼기에서 항균‧항산화 등 유용성분을 추출하거나 볶지 않은 생두에서 유용성분을 추출하는 방법, 커피 안의 유용한 다당류를 몸에 잘 흡수되도록 분해하는 방법 등이다. 아다네 씨는 “에티오피아가 세계 5대 커피 산지 중 한 곳인 만큼 커피에 대해 보다 과학적으로 연구해 국가 발전에 보탬이 되고 싶다.”면서 “세계에서도 유례없이 빠르게 성장한 한국에서 직접 비결을 배우고 싶어 정부초청 장학생을 신청했는데, 수준 높은 기술과 장비, 열정적인 교수님과 연구원들 덕분에 좋은 성과를 얻을 수 있었다.”고 말했다. 그는 앞으로 부경대서 1년간 박사후과정까지 마친 뒤 에티오피아로 돌아가 다시 아디스아바바대 화학생명공학과 교수로 부임할 예정이다. 그는 “부경대에서 커피와 함께 다른 식품에 대해 추가 연구를 수행하며 연구역량을 더욱 키운 뒤 고국 대학생들에게 빠짐없이 전수해주고 싶다.”고 포부를 밝혔다. 한편 그는 박사과정 기간 동안 탁월한 연구 성과를 인정받아 지난 17일 경기 성남시 국립국제교육원에서 열린 정부 초청 외국인 장학생 귀국환송회에서 졸업생 466명의 대표로 고별사를 했다. <부경투데이> Professor of Ethiopia University has been attracting attention for studying in Korea and receiving a doctorate in 'coffee' research. He was a professor of Department of Biotechnology at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia. In September, 2014, he was a government scholarship student and entered Ph.D. in Food Science & Technology, PKNU. He said, "My Ethiopian friend, who studied at PKNU as a government scholarship student, strongly recommended, so I decided to study at PKNU." He studied the methods of extracting nutrients from coffee beans in Department of Food Science & Technology (Prof. Jeon, Byung-soo) of PKNU for three years as a doctor, and published four papers in international journals as major authors and seven co-authors as domestic authors. His researches include methods of encapsulating coffee aroma and coffee oil extracted from beans, extracting beneficial ingredients such as antimicrobial and antioxidant from coffee grounds, extracting useful ingredients from un-roasted green beans, and a method of decomposing a useful polysaccharide in a coffee so as to be absorbed into the body. "Ethiopia is one of the top five coffee producing regions in the world, so I want to study about coffee more scientifically and contribute to the development of the country," he said. "I want to learn the secrets in Korea where the only one fast grown nation in the world, so I applied for Global Korea Scholarship, and I was able to achieve good results thanks to the high level of technology and equipment, enthusiastic professors and researchers. " He will return to Ethiopia after a year post-doctoral course at PKNU and will be appointed Professor of Chemistry and Biotechnology at Addis Ababa University (AAU). He said, "I would like to carry out further research on other foods with coffee at PKNU and to improve my research capacity and give it to my university students." He was recognized for his outstanding research achievements during his Ph.D., as a result, he was awarded the honor as a representative of 466 graduates from the Global Korea Scholarship of National Institute for International Education at Seongnam On the 17th <Pukyong Today> |
