70년 전 6‧25전쟁에 참전한 해외 참전용사들의 은혜에 보답하기 위해 8000 km를 날아간 한국 청년들이 캐나다 노병들의 가슴을 울렸다.
부경대학교 평화봉사단 UN서포터즈(대표 임효빈‧영어영문학부 3학년) 학생 13명이 1월 16일(한국시간) 캐나다 밴쿠버 씨포드 하이랜더스에서 캐나다 참전용사 5명과 참전용사 유가족 등 50여명을 초청한 가운데 보은행사를 펼친 것.
부경대생들은 이날 행사에 참가한 노병들 앞에서 미리 준비해 간 감사의 편지를 낭독하고, 감사의 노래를 불렀다. 감사패와 기념품도 전달했다. 이들의 활동에 노병들은 눈시울을 붉혔다.
행사에 참석한 참전용사 일본계 캐나다인 마모루 야마네 씨(86)는 “오랜 시간이 지났는데도 우리를 잊지 않고 머나먼 이곳까지 찾아와준 어린 학생들이 정말 대견하고 고맙다. 이번 행사 덕분에 다른 참전용사들의 소식도 오랜만에 들을 수 있어 정말 기쁘다.”고 밝혔다.
한국 청년들의 방문 소식에 주밴쿠버대한민국총영사관에서도 행사를 함께 하기로 하고, 이강준 영사가 행사에 참석해 참전용사들에게 직접 감사의 메달을 수여하기도 했다.
이 보은행사를 연 UN서포터즈는 6‧25전쟁에서 목숨을 바친 용사들의 희생정신을 기리기 위해 지난 2009년 발족한 봉사단이다. 해마다 해외 참전용사 보은행사는 물론, 부경대 옆에 위치한 세계유일의 유엔묘지인 UN기념공원을 찾아 헌화하고 빗돌을 닦는 봉사도 이들의 임무다.
이들은 해외평화봉사를 위해 지난 13일 열흘간 일정으로 한국에서 출발했다. 캐나다는 6‧25전쟁에 미국 영국에 이어 세 번째로 많은 2만7천여 명을 파병했고, 이 가운데 516명이 전사하는 희생을 치렀다. UN기념공원에도 전몰용사 378명의 유해가 안장돼 있다.
UN서포터즈 임효빈 학생(23)은 “열심히 준비한 행사를 보고 눈물을 흘리며 고마워하는 분들을 보고 오히려 우리가 감동을 받았다.”면서, “시간이 많이 흘러 남은 참전용사 분들이 점점 줄어들고 있는데, 이들이 잊히지 않도록 더욱 열심히 활동해야겠다고 다짐했다.”고 말했다. <부경투데이>

            "Impressed with Korean youth who have not forgotten us even after 70 years"

            ’Spotlight’, Pukyong National University students held an event to look for Canadian war veterans.
Korean youths who flew 8000 km resounded the heart of Canadian war veterans in return for the favor of overseas veterans of the 6‧25 Korean War that occurred 70 years ago.
The gratitude event was held with 13 students from the UN Supporters of the Peace Corps of Pukyong National University (CEO Lim Hyo-bin, 3rd grade, Dept. of English Language and Literature) invited 50 Canadian war veterans and 50 families of war veterans from Seaford Highlanders in Vancouver, Canada, on January 16 (in Korean time).
Pukyong students read the letters of gratitude prepared in front of the war veterans who participated in the gratitude event and sang songs of gratitude. They also gave thanks and souvenirs to the war veterans. Eyes of the old soldiers were reddened by heart-warming event which students held.
Mr. Mamoru Yamane (age 86), a Japanese-Canadian war veteran who attended the event, said, “Thanks to them and I am proud of the young students who have come to distant place without forgetting us even after a long time. I am very happy to hear from other veterans after a long interval through this event.”
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver decided to join the event in response to the young Koreans’ visit, and Lee Kang-joon, the consular representative also attended the event and awarded the veterans with a medal of appreciation.
The UN Supporters, the host of the gratitude event, was launched in 2009 to honor the sacrifices of the warriors who died in the Korean War. Their mission is to visit the UN Veterans of the World War, as well as the UN Memorial Park, the world’s only UN cemetery next to Pukyong National University.
They departed from Korea on the 13th for a 10-day overseas peace service. Canada dispatched 27,000 more soldiers, the third largest after the United Kingdom, during the Korean War, and 516 of them were sacrificed. The remains of 378 war veterans are buried in UN Memorial Park.
Lim Hyo-bin (age 23) of UN supporters said, “We were impressed by the people who wept tears of joy and thanked us for our hard work. As time goes by, there are fewer veterans left, but I made a promise to myself to work harder to keep them from being forgotten.” <Pukyong Today>
