독창적인 허스키 보이스로 사람들에게 진한 감동을 전해주는 그가 지난 5일 새 노래를 내놨다. 3번째 싱글앨범 ‘오늘처럼 아름답다’가 그것이다. 부경대 졸업 후 죽 서울에서 살고 있다는 그와 3월 17일 전화 인터뷰를 했다. 전화기로 전해오는 목소리, 노래할 때와 마찬가지로 탁한 톤이었다. 간간히 부산 사투리가 묻어 있었다. “문자에 찍힌 ‘부경대’라는 단어를 본 순간, 얼마나 반갑던지요.” 부경투데이 취재진이 그에게 보낸 메시지를 보고 그가 한 말이었는데, 강한 동질감이 느껴졌다. 그는 어떤 부경대생이었을까? 전공인 디자인보다 음악에 더 빠져 살았던 청년이었다. 대학시절 동아리 ‘아우라지’ 밴드에서 건반을 치고 노래했다. 산업디자인학과 실습실 자신의 자리에, 컴퓨터 아래에 건반을 숨겨 두고, 공강 때 종종 후배들 앞에서 연주하며 노래하기를 즐겼다고 한다. 방송에서 본 그의 멋진 건반 연주 장면이 떠올랐다.
어떻게 김 동문은 그만의 독창적인 허스키 보이스를 갖게 되었을까? 20대 초반, 군 입대를 전후해 본격 노래를 시작했단다. 그 즈음, 그는 자신의 음악적 베이스캠프 같은, 제임스 잉그램(James Ingram, 1952~2019) 등과 조우하게 된다. 김 동문은 그 소울가수의 ‘소리’가 참 좋았다고 했다. 흑인창법에 빠져 수없이 반복하며 따라 불렀다고 한다. 그는 “그냥 따라 부를 수밖에 없었다.”고 말했다. 나중에 가수가 되겠다고 노래한 것은 아니었다. 부경대 졸업 후 광고음악을 만드는 회사에 취업했다. 그의 관심은 작곡 쪽이었던 것. 그래도 그는 그냥 소울이 좋아서 수시로 소리를 내지르며 무한반복 노래를 따라하며 연구했다고 한다. 그렇게 10년을 하다 보니 오늘날 그만의 허스키 보이스와 창법에 이르게 되었다고 한다. 그가 방송에서 ‘재야의 고수’로 소개된 배경을 짐작할 만하다. 이제 그는 그동안의 무명생활을 벗어나 많은 사람들의 기대와 사랑을 받는 가수로 발돋움했다.
방송출연 후 어떻게 지냈을까? “새로운 음원 준비에 바빴어요.” 그의 신곡 ‘오늘처럼 아름답다’를 말한다. “음원 발표용 영상도 찍고, 언론사들 인터뷰에도 응하고요.” 이 노래는 KBS2 드라마 <태양의 후예> 등의 테마송을 만든 이상규(ROZ), 박준식, 백현수 등이 작곡했다. 김 동문은 이 발라드의 작사에 참여했다. 가사에는 힘들었던 언더그라운드 생활을 지나온 그의 자전적인 이야기가 스며있다. ‘오늘처럼 아름답다’는 어떤 노래일까? 그는 “제가 방송을 통해 뜻밖에도 많은 사랑을 받았어요. 요즘 다들 많이 힘든데, 사랑을 주신 모든 분들에게 감사를 전하고 싶었지요. 이 노래로 마음을 어루만져 드리며 위로하고 응원해 드리고 싶었어요.”라고 말했다. 그 가사를 음미해보자. ‘길은 멀고도 아득하고 아직도 끝은 보이질 않네/ 나약해진 기대 기약 없는 날들/ 시간은 또 흘러가네 또 시작해야지 마음을 움켜잡아보리다 크게 소리치는 태양아 차게 불어오는 바람아/ 답을 알지 못해도 /서러웠던 추억도 오늘처럼 아름답다’ 이렇게 김 동문은 시도 잘 짓고, 노래도 잘 한다. 그리고 디자인을 전공한 그는 그림도 잘 그린다. 그는 “평생 디자인하기 위해 디자인을 전공하는 것은 아니지 않을까요? 무슨 공부든 자신의 꿈을 찾는 과정이라고 봅니다. 하고 싶은 거 딱 정하지 말고, 주변 이야기에 너무 흔들리지 말고 다양한 경험을 하는 후배들이 많았으면 좋겠습니다.”라고 말했다. 그는 모교에서 불러주면 언제든 달려오겠다고 했다. 문득, 벚꽃 피는 즈음 캠퍼스에서 그의 허스키한 목소리가 울려 퍼지면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다. <부경투데이>
Kim Jun-hui, 'SingAgain #10 Singer' is an alumnus from the Class '95 of Department of Industrial Design at Pukyong National University. He recently released a new song on the 5th, who deeply impress people with his original husky voice. That is the 3rd single album, 'Beautiful as Today'. We had a telephone interview with him on March 17th, who has been living in Seoul ever since graduating from Pukyong National University. The voice over the phone was as raspy and thick as when he was singing. Sometimes his accent had a Busan dialect. "The moment I saw the word 'Pukyong National University' in the text, I was so glad and delighted." That was what he said after seeing the message sent to him by the reporters of Pukyong Today, and we felt a strong sense of identity. How can we describe his campus life at Pukyong National University in the past? He was a youth who lived more addicted to music than his original major, design. In his campus life, he played the keyboard and sang in the band 'Auraji'. It is said that he enjoyed singing and playing in front of his juniors during lectures, hiding the keyboard at his place, under the computer in the laboratory of the Department of Industrial Design. I come up with his wonderful keyboard playing scene that I saw on the air. How did Kim come to have his own unique husky voice? It is said that he began singing in earnest in his early 20s, before and after enlisting in the military. Around that time, he encounters James Ingram (1952~2019), which is like his musical base camp. Kim said that the soul singer's 'tone of voice' was so nice. He said he was fascinated by R&B and sang the song countless times. "I could not help myself but to sang and sang again," he said. It was not a reason that he sang that he would become a singer later. After graduating from Pukyong National University, he got a job at a company that makes advertising music. His interest was composition things. Still, he said that he just liked the soul music, so he shouted from time to time and studied by repeating songs. He said that after 10 years of doing so, he has come to have his own husky voice and singing skills today. The background he was introduced as ‘the hidden master’ in the broadcast can be guessed. Now, he ended the life of having no name and has become a singer who is loved by many people. How has he been after the public appearance? "I was pretty busy preparing a new album." He is mentioning of his new song, 'Beautiful as Today'. "I also filmed a video for sound recording, and I also responded to interviews with media companies." The song was composed by Lee Sang-gyu (ROZ), Park Joon-sik, and Baek Hyeon-soo, who made theme songs for KBS2 drama <Descendants of the Sun>. Kim participated in the lyrics of this ballad song. The lyrics contain the autobiographical story of him through a difficult underground life. What kind of song is 'Beautiful as Today'? He said, "I received a lot of love unexpectedly through the broadcast program. Everyone is having a hard time these days, but I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone who gave me their love. With this song, I wanted to touch their hearts, comfort and support them." Let's savor the lyric. The road is faraway, seems there is no end in sight/ faint expectations and days without promises/ The clock is ticking I try to hold my mind saying start again. The sun that screams loud the wind that blows cold/ I ain't got an answer but the sad memories are beautiful as today' As you can see, Kim writes poetry well and sings well. Since he majored in design, he paints well. He said, "Isn't it possible that you are majoring in design only to do design things for your entire life? I think any study is a process of finding one's dream. I hope there are many pukyong students who don't decide what they want to do at once, who don't wander by the stories of the people around them, and have various experiences." He said he would come over anytime if his alma mater calls him. By the time the cherry blossoms bloomed, I thought it would be nice if his husky voice echoed on campus. <Pukyong Today> |
