국립부경대생, 북태평양해양과학기구(PICES) ‘젊은 과학자’ 선발

- 남소연 박사과정생 … 미국 2024 연차총회참석 전폭 지원

국립부경대학교(총장 장영수)는 해양생물학과 남소연 박사과정생(지도교수 현상윤)이 2024년 북태평양해양과학기구 연차총회(PICES-2024) 참석 지원대상자인 ‘젊은 과학자’로 선발됐다고 밝혔다.

남소연 박사과정생은 최근 제주국제컨벤션센터에서 열린 한국해양학회 춘계학술대회에서 진행된 PICES-2024 젊은 과학자 선발심사를 통해 선발됐다.

PICES는 북태평양 지역 해양환경에 대한 효과적인 관리와 학문적 교류를 위해 설립된 정부 간 국제기구로 한국, 미국, 캐나다, 러시아, 중국, 일본 등 북태평양 주변 6개국이 회원으로 참여하고 있다.

남소연 박사과정생은 이번 선발로 올해 미국 호놀룰루에서 개최 예정인 PICES 연차총회에 항공료와 등록비 등을 지원받아 참석하게 된다.

그는 전국의 해양 분야 젊은 과학자들 가운데 5명 내외를 선발하기 위해 진행된 이번 선발심사에서, 환경 변화가 해양 생물에게 미치는 영향을 고려해 자원이 어떻게 변화하는지 체장 기반 모델을 사용해 평가한 논문을 영어로 발표해 우수한 평가를 받았다.

그는 현재의 상태뿐만 아니라 환경과 자원 관리라는 여러 시나리오에 따라 자원을 평가하는 관리전략평가(MSE)를 위해 고등어 자료를 예시로 체장 기반 모델을 적용하고, 수온 상승이 더 작은 성숙 크기를 유발한다는 ‘온도 크기 규칙(TSR)’ 영향을 고려한 연구 결과를 인정받았다. <부경투데이>

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that Nam So-Yeon, a phd. student in the department of marine biology under the supervision of professor Hyun Sang-Yoon, has been selected as a 'Young scientist' to attend the annual conference 2024 of the North pacific marine science organization (PICES-2024).

Nam So-Yeon was recently selected as a PICES-2024 Young scientist through the selection process held during the Korean society of oceanography's spring conference at the Jeju international convention center.

PICES is an intergovernmental organization established for the effective management of the marine environment and academic exchange in the north pacific region, with membership from six countries surrounding the north pacific: South Korea, the United States, Canada, Russia, China, and Japan.

Doctoral student Nam So-Yeon will be attending the upcoming PICES annual conference in Honolulu, USA this year, with support for airfare and registration fees.

Among the young marine scientists nationwide, she was selected through a competitive process in which she presented a paper in English evaluating how resources change in response to environmental changes affecting marine life using a length-based model, receiving high praise for her presentation.

For the Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE), which assesses resources under various scenarios including the current state as well as environment and resource management, she applied the length-based model using mackerel data as an example, and her research was recognized for considering the impact of the 'temperature-size rule (TSR)', which posits that rising temperatures lead to smaller maturation sizes. <Pukyong Today>
