국립부경대 동기들 손잡고 모교에 10억 쾌척
- 강세흥 동문, 15일 ‘장동석 연구지원기금’ 기부

국립부경대학교(총장 배상훈)는 5월 15일 오전 대학본부 접견실에서 강세흥 동문(제조학과 58학번)이 출연한 ‘장동석 연구지원기금’ 전달식을 개최했다.
이날 강세흥 동문과 동기인 국립부경대 장동석 명예교수가 전달식에 참석해 10억 원의 연구지원금 기부증서를 대학에 전달했다.
재미교포 사업가로 성공한 강세흥 동문은 현재 윌리엄 & 마가렛 강 재단(William and Margaret Kang Foundation) 대표를 맡고 있다.
그는 1964년 국립부경대의 전신 부산수산대를 졸업하고 1966년 미국으로 건너가 워싱턴대학에서 식품공학을 전공해 학·석사학위를 받았다. 1983년 SKS 트레이딩을 설립해 국제적인 수산물 종합무역회사로 성장시켰다. 이 같은 활약으로 그는 모교의 ‘자랑스러운 부경인상(2008년)’, ‘명예 수산학 박사학위(2017년)’를 받기도 했다.
그는 최근 모교의 연구 역량과 발전을 지원하자는 장동석 명예교수의 제안에 선뜻 발전기금을 출연했다. 강세흥 동문은 올해 1억을 기부한 데 이어 매년 1억씩 총 10억 원을 전달하기로 했다. 기부자인 그의 요청으로 기금 명칭을 ‘장동석 연구지원기금’으로 하고, 전달식에도 장동석 명예교수가 대신 참석했다.
이에 따라 이 기부금은 강세흥 동문과 장동석 명예교수가 몸담았던 수산과학대학 소속 교원들의 연구지원을 비롯해 소속 대학원생들의 장학금 등 대학 발전을 위해 사용될 예정이다.
장동석 명예교수는 “모교에서 30년 이상 제자들을 가르쳤고 2005년 퇴임 후에도 나날이 발전하는 모교에 항상 자부심을 가졌었는데, 내 이름을 딴 기금을 전달할 수 있어 정말 영광이다. 국립부경대가 지역과 국가를 대표하는 대학으로 더욱 발전하기를 바란다.”라고 밝혔다. <부경투데이>
Pukyong National University Alumni Join Forces to Donate 1 billion KRW to Their Alma Mater
-Alumnus Kang Se-heung Donates to ‘Jang Dong-seok Research Fund’ on the 15th
Pukyong National University (President Baek Sang-hoon) held a donation ceremony on the morning of May 15 in the university headquarters reception room, where alumnus Kang Se-heung (Class of ’58, Department of Manufacturing) contributed to the “Jang Dong-seok Research Fund.”
At the ceremony, Kang Se-heung and his classmate, Professor Emeritus Jang Dong-seok of Pukyong National University, participated and presented a donation certificate for 1 billion KRW in research support funds to the university.
Kang Se-heung, a successful Korean American entrepreneur, currently serves as the head of the William and Margaret Kang Foundation.
After graduating from the former Busan Fisheries College (the predecessor of Pukyong National University) in 1964, Kang Se-heung moved to the United States in 1966, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in food engineering from the University of Washington. In 1983, he founded SKS Trading and developed it into a leading international seafood trading company. For his accomplishments, he was honored with the “Proud Pukyong Alumnus Award” in 2008 and an honorary Doctor of Fisheries Science degree in 2017 from his alma mater.
Recently, he willingly decided to donate a development fund in response to a proposal by Professor Emeritus Jang Dong-seok, who suggested supporting the university’s research capabilities and growth. Kang donated 100 million KRW this year and pledged to contribute a total of 1 billion KRW over the coming years, giving 100 million KRW annually. At the donor’s request, the fund was named the “Jang Dong-seok Research Fund,” and Professor Jang attended the donation ceremony on his behalf.
Accordingly, the donated fund will be used to support research activities of faculty members at the College of Fisheries Sciences―where both Kang Se-heung and Professor Emeritus Jang Dong-seok once served―as well as to provide scholarships for graduate students and contribute to the university’s overall development.
Professor Jang Dong-seok remarked, “I taught students at my alma mater for over 30 years, and even after my retirement in 2005, I have always taken pride in the university’s continued progress. It is truly an honor to have a fund bearing my name. I sincerely hope that Pukyong National University will continue to grow as a leading institution representing both the region and the nation.” <Pukyong Today>
