카자흐스탄 유학생 22배↑ ‘부경초청장학생’ 제도 통했다
- 국립부경대 개도국 유학생 지원 효과 ‘톡톡’
국립부경대학교(총장 배상훈)가 ‘부경초청장학생(Global Pukyong Scholarship)’ 제도를 13년째 운영하며 외국인 유학생 유치에 성과를 거두고 있어 주목된다.
국립부경대는 2013년 대비 2025년 올해(4월 기준) 카자흐스탄 유학생 수가 1명에서 22명으로 증가했다. 미얀마 유학생은 13명에서 187명으로 14배, 우즈베키스탄 유학생은 7명에서 58명으로 8배 늘어났다.
국립부경대의 학·석·박사과정, 석박사통합과정, 교환학생, 연수과정, 복수학위 등에 재학 중인 전체 외국인 유학생 수 역시 2013년 946명에서 올해 1,648명으로 약 2배 증가했지만, 이 세 국가의 증가세는 특히 두드러진다.
국립부경대는 이 같은 실적이 국제교류본부 주관으로 2013년 시작한 부경초청장학생 제도의 효과로 분석한다.
이 제도는 저개발국이나 개발도상국의 우수한 학생들에게 한국의 우수 고등교육 기회를 제공하고, 동시에 외국인 유학생 유치를 확대하기 위해 도입됐다. 지금까지 카자흐스탄과 미얀마, 우즈베키스탄에서 해마다 1명~9명씩 총 59명 학생을 부경초청장학생으로 추천했다. 올 2학기에도 카자흐스탄에서 새로 선발된 학생 1명이 입학한다. 이들에게는 학사과정 4년간의 등록금과 건강보험료가 지원된다.
부경초청장학생들은 실제 유학 생활을 바탕으로 다른 외국인 학생들에게 국립부경대 유학을 추천하는 등 ‘친(親) 부경인’ 역할을 하며 유학생 유치에 기여하고 있다는 평가다. 특히 각 나라의 추천을 받은 우수한 학생들인 만큼, 졸업 후에는 각국에서 활약하며 모교인 국립부경대의 위상을 높이는 효과도 기대된다.
서재철 국립부경대 국제교류본부장은 “유학생 유치를 위한 노력이 데이터로 확인된 만큼, 장학 혜택을 더욱 확대하고, 부산시 우호협력도시 등으로 선정 대상을 다양화하는 등 내실을 다지며 우수 유학생을 유치하는 데 더욱 힘쓰겠다.”라고 밝혔다. <부경투데이>

Kazakh Student Enrollment Surges 22-Fold ― PKNU Invitation Scholarship Proves Effective
- Pukyong National University Sees Tangible Results from Its Scholarship Program for Students from Developing Countries
Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-hoon) is drawing attention for its success in attracting international students through its ‘Global Pukyong Scholarship’ program, now in its 13th year.
As of April 2025, the number of Kazakhstani students at Pukyong National University has increased from just 1 in 2013 to 22. The number of students from Myanmar has grown from 13 to 187, a 14-fold increase, while those from Uzbekistan rose from 7 to 58, marking an eightfold increase.
The overall number of international students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, integrated master’s？doctoral, exchange, training, and dual-degree programs has nearly doubled―from 946 in 2013 to 1,648 in 2025. However, the growth among students from these three countries is particularly notable.
Pukyong National University attributes this achievement to the effectiveness of its “Global Pukyong Scholarship” program, which was launched in 2013 under the leadership of the Office of International Affairs.
The program was established to provide outstanding students from underdeveloped and developing countries with access to high-quality higher education in Korea, while also expanding the university’s international student enrollment. Since its inception, a total of 59 students from Kazakhstan, Myanmar, and Uzbekistan have been recommended as Global Pukyong Scholars, with 1 to 9 students selected annually. One newly selected student from Kazakhstan will also enroll in the second semester of this year. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health insurance for four years of undergraduate study.
The Global Pukyong Scholars are playing a key role in attracting more international students by actively recommending Pukyong National University to others based on their own study abroad experiences, effectively serving as ‘Pukyong ambassadors.’ As these students are highly qualified and officially recommended by their home countries, they are also expected to enhance the university’s reputation by making meaningful contributions in their respective countries after graduation.
Seo Jae-cheol, Director of the Office of International Affairs at Pukyong National University, stated, “Since our efforts to attract international students are now clearly reflected in the data, we will further expand scholarship benefits and diversify our pool of candidates to include students from Busan’s sister and friendship cities.
