I love Korea’s get-together culture!
Ochinpang (Malaysia․Graduate school of construction management collaboration course)
It’s been two years since I came to Korea to study. After I graduated from the department of civil engineering from the University of Malaysia, I decided to attend Pukyong National University’s graduate school to learn the high-technology construction techniques of Korea. Korea was a familiar country because Petronas Twin Tower which is a famous tower in Malaysia was made by a collaboration of Korea and Japan.
I’ve experienced many new things in Korea. It was too hard to follow Korean students’ love of learning because they usually study and research until 9 or 10 pm. However, Malaysian graduate students usually finish their study at 6 pm. It was very hard to be familiar with Korean students because they study so hard, and my Korean language skill was bad as well.
However, those worries soon disappeared because of Korean’s get-together culture. Malaysians don’t drink alcohol that much as its state religion is Islam. They don’t even sell it except in some special places. In contrast, I can buy and drink alcohol easily in Korea, and going to a second place after having dinner is kind of a formula of the get-together. It was amazing that I can talk with a lot of people who used to be not talkative at all and that we could become familiar with each other through these meetings. Thanks to the get-togethers, I could feel comfortable with seniors and professors, so that made it easier to study the subject and Korean language too.
The four seasons of Korea are also beautiful. In Malaysia, there is just summer and the wet season, but the winter of Korea was quite an amazing experience for me. Last winter, I went to a ski resort with my friends, and I was up too much because of the snow which I’ve never seen before. Of course, the first skiing attempt of my life was interesting as well. In addition, I enjoyed Korea’s winter time a lot, doing ice fishing in Pyeongchang trout festival and visiting the sheep ranch of Daegwallyeong.
When I graduate from this graduate school next year, I want to get a job in a Korean construction company to show my ability because I want to live in Korea for a longer time and experience more amazing get-togethers and beautiful winters.
