University students are drawing attention for their invention of position recognition system, which shows the location indoors with LED lights.

Kim Jun Yeong (2nd year of Master’s degree), Kim Ji Su (1st year of Master’s degree), Kim Min Ji (Junior) and Kim In Jun (Junior) in the department of Electronic Engineering of Pukyong National University developed a loT-based position tracking system using visible light communication.

The system is a kind of “navigation” that gives indoor location of moving robot or human using visible light communication. Since the Global Positioning System (GPS) does not work indoors, the visible light communication, which exchanges information by LED lights, is used on the device.

The students planned and produced the visible light communication system with semiconductor chip sets and mounted it on LED lights and mobile robot.

Each of LED lights installed on the ceiling sends different position signal with different degree of flicker, and the robot analyzes information of the lights to recognize its location and move.

The students also produced a smartphone application to check and change the indoor location information of LED lights.

“Existing gyro sensor, acceleration sensor and image sensor that are used for location sensing indoors require high performance and high cost, but this visible light communication system can provide indoor location information with low cost,” said Professor Lee Won Chang, academic adviser in the department of Electronic Engineering.

The design awarded the Top Prize in the 6th Texas Instrument Innovation Challenge held by Texas Instruments Korea. <Pukyong Today>
