PKNU Stands Out for Its Physics Research
According to an evaluation conducted by National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), the manpower training team for functional condensed matters, under the leadership of Professor Jeong Jung-hyun of the Department of Physics at PKNU, was the only physics team that was selected as Best Team among 544 project teams of the Brain Korea 21 Plus at the universities across the country. A total of 26 teams were chosen as the Best Team, and only two - Physics at the Pukyong National University and Mathematics at the Seoul National University – in the field of natural science. Considering that the BK21Plus is a project to provide financial support for postgraduate students and promising researchers, PKNU proved to be superior in education and research of physics. The BK21Plus project of PKNU consists of three teams: Nano Thin Film Study under the supervision of Professor Jeong Jung-hyun, Composite Material Development and Research under the supervision of Professor Park Sung-heum and Professor Jang Jae-won, Physics-based Theoretical Research under the supervision of Professor Hong Ji-sang and Professor Baek Seung-ki. They are committed to developing professional manpower for nanocomposite material development. Nano technology is a key technology that can be applied widely to the industry including advanced material, information and communication, aerospace, medical and biotechnology, machine and robot, environment and energy. During the two year period from 2013, a total of 112 papers, written by professors who are part of the manpower training team for functional condensed matters, were included in the Science Citation Index (SCI), and 80 papers by graduate students of the team. The team leader, Professor Jeong Jung-hyun, recently attended the award ceremony held by NRF at EL Tower, Seoul, as a representative of the team to receive a citation. Meanwhile, among 544 project teams subject to the evaluation in October last year, only 172 teams went through preliminary assessment, and the NRF named 26 Best Team among them, including two teams of natural science researchers, six teams of engineering researchers, four teams of social science researchers and specialized professional development teams. The teams were recognized for the efforts in developing qualified researchers of their academic fields. They achieved outstanding results in education and research, such as curricular reform, joint degree programs with universities abroad, thesis publication, and contracts with the government and industry. <Pukyong Today> ![]()
