Students of Engineering College Won Minister’s Prize It is called the Safety System Door (SSD), developed by four seniors at Pukyong National Uniersity: Park Je-sang, No Jin-seong, Ha Geun-tak, Lee Byeong-hak. The SSD prevents passenger from getting stuck between the doors with new form of sensor and computer programming. Park Je-sang said, “The existing system installed non-contact proximity sensor on the upper side of the door to sense an object measuring 7.5 millimeters or wider, but it sometimes doesn’t recognize an object smaller than 7.5 millimeters or something caught on the lower part of the door.” The students designed a tube-type pressure sensor, combined with rubber tube and flexible sensor, to be installed along the contacting edge of the door. “The sensor detects the pressure on the tube caused by contact of an object measuring 4 millimeters or longer,” Park explained, “It is installed from upper to lower edge of a screen door at regular distances, making it sense every trapped object between the doors.” They also developed a computer program that opens the door automatically after receiving a signal from the sensor when it detects an obstruction. The present system transmits the signal emitted by the sensor to driver, then the driver opens the door manually. The idea won the 2016 Trade, Industry and Energy Minister’s Prize for Capstone Design, along with a ₩3 million grant. <Pukyong Today>
