△ New Main Entrance of Pukyong National University.
Main entrance of the universities in Korea was considered to have arch, gatepost and guard room or information booth.
Pukyong National University, however, thought out of the box and made the main campus’ entry point an open plaza.
The completion ceremony of the memorial project for the 20th integration anniversary was held on November 1, celebrating the newly renovated main entrance.
The most remarkable change of the new entrance is elimination of gate arch and gatepost, customary features of main gate to the university campus in Korea.
After removing four gateposts which were installed in 1984, the width of the entrance road was expanded from 15.6 meters to 18 meters, ensuring better safety of the passenger and smooth traffic flow. The main entrance, without gateposts, is expected to break the image of authoritarianism and become a symbol of open communication.
There is no more guard room at the entrance to the campus, which was there since the day the University opened. Instead, an open plaza of 1,935 square meters replaced the area, which opens twenty-four hours to school members as well as local residents.
In 2009, the University tore down the wall of the campus for better access to the university’s public space. Moreover, with transformation of the entrance to improve accessibility, the campus offers an inviting place where people can meet up, communicate and socialize, becoming a hub for Haeundae and Gwangalli region. <Pukyong Today>
