There is no girl. ’Chilly engineering campus’ is an old saying ... The engineering college warmed up.
PKNU analysis, female university entrance rate ↑ dropout rate ↓

△ About 300 high school girls from Busan participated in the PKNU Engineering Experience Program last year, taking a group photo at the Hanmir Pavilion at  Yongdang Campus.

The college which has been called ‘Chilly Campus’ because of the small number of female students, has increased female students’ preference for the engineering college significantly.

According to Professor Yoon Jong-tae, professor of Graphic Arts Information Engineering of Women Talent Utilization Promotion Project Department of Science and Engineering at PKNU, the ratio of admission to engineering college has recently increased and the dropout rate has also decreased significantly.

The proportion of female students enrolled at PKNU engineering college increased from 26.5% in 2012 (522 out of 1,970 students) to 37.3% in 2016 (666 out of 1,784 students) and showed a large increase.

In particular, the dropout rate of female engineering students at PKNU, which was 4.5% in 2005, dropped to 0.95% in 2016, it has dropped significantly in 12 years. It means that the girls who went to engineering school and changed a lot of majors due to their aptitude does not change well now.

The dropout rate of male students in the engineering field was 1% in 2005 and 1.21% in 2016, showing no significant change.

The drop-out rate of engineering students by year was 1% in boys and 4.5% in girls in 2005, showing a big difference, but fell to 1.7% in boys and 1.8% in girls in 2012. In 2014, the ratio of boys and girls was reversed for the first time with 1.8% and 1.6%, respectively. In 2016, 1.21% of boys and 0.95% of girls remained in the middle. As a result, the dropout rate showed a tendency to decrease overall.

The selection of the engineering college is becoming clear. The reason of the freshmen of the female students chose engineering college was ’chose department according to SAT scores’ decreased from 40.4% in 2012 to 31.7% in 2016, while ’I like department than university’ increased from 22.5% in 2012 to 23.7% in 2016. The change in perception of engineering colleges due to the participation of hands-on classrooms increased from 7.1% in 2012 to 18.6% in 2016, showing that female students’ perceptions of engineering colleges are changing.

PKNU has been selected for the first time in 2006 by the Ministry of Education to support the College of Engineering Education for Girls, and has been making efforts to train women in science and technology for 11 years.

Yoon Jong-tae said, "It is encouraging that there is a growing awareness among the female students that the engineering department is not the only area where it is difficult to do things that only men can do."

Meanwhile, the number of female college students in engineering field (2015) was the highest at PKNU with 2,527 students through ’College Alert’ by the Ministry of Education. Followed by 1,975 in Chonbuk National University, 1,877 in Pusan National University, 1,723 in Kyungpook National University, 1,678 in Yeungnam University, 1,233 in Hanyang University, and 914 in Hongik University. <Pukyong today>
