"The need for a moderate diet and constant exercise" Professor Choi’s award-winning attracts attention in that most of the 22 winners are professors of pharmaceutical universities or researchers from pharmaceutical companies. ’Reviewed thesis’ refers to a paper that has been newly interpreted after reading domestic and foreign papers on a specific subject. In other words, the long-standing research know-how in the field must be supported. Professor Choi has published 7 reviewed thesis so far. Among them, he was awarded this time in recognition of the excellence of the reviewed paper entitled ’Epigenetic modifications of gene expression by lifestyle and environment’ published in <Archives Pharmacal Research> in 2017. The purport of the thesis is that maintaining a healthy diet and living in a healthy environment suppresses the generation of bad genetic factors and promotes the generation of good factors in later generations. He majored in ’Food Hygiene and Pharmacology’. He graduated from the Department of Pharmacy at Pusan National University and received a doctorate in pharmacy from Seoul National University. In 1986, Professor Choi, who joined Pukyong National University (Dept. of Food Science and Nutrition) as the first professor from pharmaceutical university and retired in last February, has devoted himself to ’searching for useful substances for human health’ for 34 years. His research subjects include gom-pi(seaweed, Ecklonia stolonifera), sea mustard, seaweed fulvescens, Gloiopeltis furcata, Sargassum seaweed (Sargassum serratifolium), and seaweeds such as seaweed fusiforme (Hizikia fusiforme (HARVEY) OKAMURA). He is one of the leading groups in Korea in research on the development of new natural medicine using these marine biological resources. He has published more than 400 papers (300 SCI-level) and has applied for 10 patents. Through his thesis, he investigated physiological activities such as whitening effect, anti-inflammatory, a decline in hypertension, improvement effect of diabetes and its complications, liver protection effect, antioxidant effect, high cholesterol lowering-effect, anticancer effect, and anti-Alzheimer’s effect by scientific method. After separating the active substance, he determined the structure to find a leading compound with high added value. Among them, the study on ’Gom-pi’ is one of his representative research achievements. He obtained individual health functional certification for functional foods that improve liver function with substances extracted from gom-pi (2018). He also patented a ’composition containing chlorotannins isolated from gom-pi extract or gom-pi extract that has liver-protective activity against the cytotoxicity of HepG2 cells by tagrin induction’. This patent has been industrialized after the technology was transferred to Natural Way Co., Ltd. Professor Choi has been selected as a special research professor at Pukyong National University since last March and has been conducting research. The subject of the research is Gyeol-meong-ja (Cassia tora seed). In addition to seaweed, he has been a leader in research in this field, with more than 30 years of research on Gyeol-meong-ja, reaching up to 20 papers. He said, "There are many research achievements I have accumulated and my own ideas and research materials," he added, "To pass these on to my students, I am studying the protective effect of Cassia toss against degenerative cranial nerves with a project with National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). He is a scholar who has studied health more deeply than anyone else and has read more domestic and foreign papers on health. What is the ’secret method to protect health’ that he found? He stressed, "Eating a proper diet, restrained life not excessive, caring for others, and constant exercise are essential elements of maintaining a healthy life." <Pukyong Today> |
