Jo Hyeon-jin, Pukyong National University’s alumni, has been appointed as the first female Senior Executive in general service since the foundation of the Korean Coast Guard.

Ms. Jo is a graduate of the Oceanography (Class of 90’) at Pukyong National University, and is a public official who entered the Korean Coast Guard as an environmental officer in 2004.

According to the Korea Coast Guard (Commissioner General Kim Hong-hee), Director General Jo Hyeon-jin (age 49) was promoted as a senior executive as the Director General of the Maritime Pollution Response Bureau on the 15th of this month.

The head of the Marine Pollution Response Bureau is responsible for overseeing all marine pollution preventive policies in Korea.

Regarding Ms. Jo’s promotion to the Director General, the Korea Coast Guard gave the meaning of the ’first female high-ranking officials since its founding in 1953’.
Ms. Jo was born in Busan in 1971, graduated from the Department of Oceanography at Pukyong National University, and went into public service in 2004 as an environmental officer of the Korea Coast Guard.

Afterwards, she was promoted to a secretary in 2012, and after serving as the head of the Marine Pollution Response Division of the Jeju Regional Korea Coast Guard and the South Regional Headquarters Korea Coast Guard, she was promoted to a Superintendent General in April 2019 and worked as the first female Director General in Korea Coast Guard’s Response Division.

The Korea Coast Guard said, "Ms. Jo has expertise and practical experience in the overall marine pollution response field, including studying abroad at Nagasaki University (Doctor of Marine Science) in Japan and working at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), she is evaluated as ’marine pollution response expert’ and key person of future internally and externally"
Ms. Jo said, "When it comes to marine pollution accidents, there are constant variables, making it difficult to respond in golden time due to  the dynamic sea," she added, "Therefore, while focusing on accident prevention, we will do our best to improve response capabilities to minimize pollution damage according to changing accident types."

Meanwhile, the Korea Coast Guard emphasized, "We are expanding the proportion of women by continuously recruiting women to enhance the female representation within the organization. By doing so, we are encouraging gender equality in the area of decision making and securing diversity of members to realize a balanced human resources’ organization culture without sexual distinction."

The Korea Coast Guard added that the proportion of female public servants (including general and police positions) is increasing gradually to 9.5% in 2018, 10.3% in 2019, and 10.9% in 2020. <Pukyong Today>
