Pukyong National University Doctoral Student’s Research Published in Top International Journal in Geotechnical Engineering

- Doctoral candidate Song Chang-ho publishes paper in <Engineering Geology>

Song Chang-ho, a doctoral student in the Department of Ocean Engineering at Pukyong National University, has published a research paper in <Engineering Geology>, one of the world’s top-tier journals in geotechnical engineering (Impact Factor 8.4, top 2.3% in JCR ranking), earning recognition for his research achievements.

The paper, titled ‘Numerical estimation of debris flow impact pressure on barriers using Froude number-based empirical coefficient’, was published under the supervision of Professor Kim Yoon-tae.

Engineering Geology is a Q1-ranked international journal recognized for its global impact in fields such as geohazards, slope stability, and debris flow modeling. According to the Clarivate Journal Citation Reports (JCR), it ranks 2nd among 65 journals in the Engineering, Geological category, placing it in the top 2.3% of the field.

In his study, Song Chang-ho proposed a Froude number-based empirical coefficient to more accurately predict the dynamic impact pressure of debris flow on structures. The research received high academic praise for its contribution, as the coefficient was systematically derived through hydraulic model experiments and numerical analysis.

In particular, the study enables a more quantitative assessment of debris flow impact pressure under high-Froude number conditions, which is expected to make practical contributions to improving design standards for mountain disaster prevention facilities and developing risk analysis models.

Song Chang-ho conducted this research as a member of the Urban Coastal Disaster Mitigation Technology Education and Research Group, supported by the Ministry of Education’s BK21 Four Project, and achieved outstanding results. <Pukyong Today>
