A research team (Chief Prof. Park Jeong-Hwan, Dept. of Marine Bio-materials & Aquaculture) led by Pukyong National University in Busan announced that it had been selected for the 'Support Project for Resolving Pending Issues in Fisheries' by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).

Pukyong National University, together with joint R&D institutions such as the Advanced Aquaculture Research Center in National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) and Auqa Pro Co., Ltd., will receive 1.78 billion won in support for three years until 2023 to conduct research on 'converging technology development to improve productivity and secure safety of inland water recycling culture'. This research is to develop a fusion expended system that applies the Aquaponics system, an eco-friendly hydroponic farming system, which has recently been attracting attention, to the inland water recycling culture. Aquaponics is a method of using various organic substances such as nitrogen and ammonia contained in water used for culturing fish such as eels as nutrients for hydroponic plants such as lettuce, purifying them, and then using the water as water for cultivating fish. Through this research, the research team plans to develop an automated pre-processing and water quality monitoring and automatic control technology to prevent side effects that may occur when directly connecting the water recycling culture system and the aquaponics system. Pukyong National University, which has been promoting the development of new technologies for key elements of the smart aquaculture system through a pilot study, produces system design and automatic control logic, and the Advanced Aquaculture Research Center in National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) selects candidates for aquaponics and promotes optimization of the aquaponics system. Aqua Pro Co., Ltd. is in charge of system automation, application of the system in the field, and operation of living lab. The Chief Professor Park Jeong-Hwan said, "Through this study, I expect to provide help by resolving the water quality management problem of the inland water recycling culture in an eco-friendly way, the use of disinfectants and antibiotics will be greatly reduced to secure the safety of aquaculture products, and it also helps to improve the profitability of fishermen and farmers by increasing the productivity of aquaponics.“
