Pukyong National University Professor Ji-Yeol Lee Draws Attention for Developing Next-Generation Ternary Logic Devices

- Achieves three logic states (0, 1, and 2) using a single polymer semiconductor … Findings published in the international journal 『Advanced Functional Materials』

Professor Ji-Yeol Lee of the Department of Next-Generation Semiconductor Engineering, College of Engineering, at Pukyong National University has attracted attention for developing a ternary logic device capable of representing three distinct logic states using a single polymer semiconductor.

In collaboration with a research team led by Professor Geun-Hyung Lee of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Inha University, Professor Lee successfully developed a ternary inverter that clearly distinguishes three logic states (0, 1, and 2) within a single polymer semiconductor, without requiring a complex heterojunction structure.

Today’s digital electronic devices are based on binary logic, which uses two states, “0” and “1.” In contrast, Multi-Valued Logic enables a single device to represent three or more logic states, increasing information density while reducing the number of devices and interconnections required. This has attracted attention as a next-generation computing technology with the potential to overcome the limitations of Moore’s Law. However, conventional multi-valued logic devices typically rely on heterojunction structures that combine different semiconductors, making their fabrication processes complex.

The joint research team addressed this challenge by utilizing the sequential occurrence of electrostatic doping and electrochemical doping in a polymer semiconductor. At low voltages, ion penetration is restricted, causing electrostatic doping to occur at the semiconductor surface. At higher voltages, ions penetrate the semiconductor, initiating electrochemical doping. The researchers confirmed that a stable intermediate conduction state forms between these two processes, in which the current remains nearly constant despite changes in voltage.

When the research team performed handwritten digit recognition using the MNIST dataset, incorporating the characteristics of the actual device, the ternary neural network achieved an accuracy of 89.3%, outperforming the binary neural network, which recorded 74.1%.

The findings were published on October 1 in Volume 36, Issue 44 of Advanced Functional Materials, an international journal in the field of materials science, under the title “Single-Polymer Multi-Valued Logic Enabled by Sequential Electrostatic-to-Electrochemical Doping.” Professor Ji-Yeol Lee of Pukyong National University and Professor Geun-Hyung Lee of Inha University served as corresponding authors, while doctoral student Dong-Hyun Park of Inha University participated as the first author.

Professor Ji-Yeol Lee said, “In this study, we successfully achieved a stable intermediate logic state by sequentially controlling two distinct doping mechanisms in a polymer semiconductor. Our findings demonstrate the potential of this technology to serve as a foundational technology for next-generation, low-power neural network computing.”

Meanwhile, this research was supported by the Basic Research Program of the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the Industrial Innovation Talent Development Support Program (Advanced Training Program for High-Value-Added Petrochemical Materials Specialists) of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. <Pukyong Today>
