취업난이 대학생활의 낭만을 앗아간 시대, 630일 동안 자전거로 아메리카 대륙을 종단하고 아프리카·유럽 일주를 꿈꾸는 대학생이 있어 화제를 모으고 있다.

오는 2월 졸업을 앞두고 있는 김태현(29·부경대 재료공학과 4) 씨는 또래들이 취업 준비에 정신이 없는 요즘 끝내지 못한 세계일주를 다시 떠나기 위한 준비를 하느라 바쁘다.

김 씨는 이르면 오는 3월, 늦어도 5월께 아프리카 최남단 남아프리카 공화국을 시작으로 아프리카대륙과 유럽대륙을 자전거를 타고 종단할 계획이다. 여행 기간은 따로 정하지 않았다. "유럽 북쪽의 어느 나라에서 여행이 끝나는 순간 한국으로 돌아가겠다"는 계획만 세웠을 뿐이다.

김 씨의 ’대책 없는’ 여행은 이번이 처음이 아니다. 김 씨는 2008년 4월부터 지난해 1월까지 630일 동안 자전거로 아메리카 대륙을 종단했다. 미국 LA에서 시작해 멕시코 과테말라 페루 볼리비아 아르헨티나를 거쳐 파타고니아까지 16개 나라를 여행하는 동안 자전거로 누빈 거리만 2만5000㎞였다.

김 씨는 아끼던 오토바이를 판 돈 250만 원에 수 개월 간 아르바이트를 하여 1000만 원을 모아 아메리카 여행을 떠났다. 2년간 여행을 하며 쓴 돈은 하루 평균 5000원. 밥은 거의 매일 직접 지어 먹었고, 사막 한 가운데서 텐트를 치고 잠을 잤다. 페루에서는 그나마 적은 여행경비를 두 번이나 소매치기에 털려 낙담하기도 했다.

이렇게 힘든 여행을 또 떠나는 이유에 대해 김 씨는 딱히 설명할 말이 없다고 한다. 사람도 차도 없는 남미의 망망대해 같은 도로를 질주할 때 평안하고 행복했다는 말만 덧붙였다.

김 씨의 좌충우돌 아메리카대륙 자전거 여행은 인터넷에서도 큰 관심을 모았다. 여행기를 기록한 블로그 ’택꼬의 자전거 세계일주(http://blog.naver.com/tecggo)’ 는 파워블로그로 선정됐고, 블로그 총 방문자만 85만 명에 달했다. 이 같은 인기를 업고 지난해 9월에는 ’떠나지 않으면 청춘이 아니다’는 여행기를 발간했다. 얼마 전 2판을 찍을 만큼 책도 꽤 잘나간다.

한국에 돌아온 김 씨는 지난해 마지막 두 학기 학교를 다니며 취업난을 실감했다. 이때까지 김 씨의 여행을 묵묵히 응원해주던 부모님도 졸업 뒤에는 튼튼한 직장을 잡기 원하고 있다. 하지만 김 씨는 "자전거로 세계일주를 하겠다는 목표가 있으니 취업에 대한 걱정도 극복할 수 있을 것 같다"며 "앞으로 무엇을 할지는 여행 뒤에 생각해 보겠다"고 웃었다.<박정민 기자 link@kookje.co.kr>

Here is a great man who completed a very long itinerary.
It took about 630 days to go on a trip to America including 16 countries.
He is due to depart this March or May again.

He published a book which is about his travelling.
 

We commonly say that it is too difficult to get a job. Some people even think that the difficulty of finding employment deprives the romance of the university life.
However, there is a man who succeeded in crossing American continent by bicycle for about 630 days last time. He is preparing to go on a trip to Africa and Europe by bicycle these days. Therefore, he is becoming the talk of the town.
 
He is going to graduate from our university this coming February, who turned 29 and is majoring in material engineering. Unlikely other people his age who is busy looking for employment, he is busy making preparations for journey unfinished.
 
He says that his traveling is going to start in this March if it is early, no later than in this May, even though he has not decided when he leaves exactly. He just expressed his big ambition. “When I arrive at the north of the Europe where it is not exactly decided yet, I will return to Korea.”
 
As mentioned earlier, his traveling that everyone said that it is impossible is not the first attempt. He crossed the continent of America from April in 2008 to January in 2010 riding a bicycle. The total distance traveled from Los Angeles in America to Patagonia in Argentine via Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Bolivia including another 16 countries was approximately 25,000 kilometers.
 
Before starting his first trip, he made 250-thousand-won by selling his cherished motorcycle and earned 10- million-won by working part-time for several months. And then, he only spent an average of about 5-thousand-won a day for last 2 years. He cooked his own meals every day, and he slept in a tent in the middle of the desert. Even, he was snatched his travel expenses twice in Peru. He says that just thinking of it still makes him feel discouraged.
 
We ask him why he wants to take off again, even if his first trip had many difficulties. But he says that it is difficult to explain the reason he want to leave again. After a few seconds, he mentions that he was just happy when he sped along the road where there were not many cars and people.
 
 
After he came back to Korea, he realized that finding a job is really difficult being in university for two semesters. Although his parents were behind him all the way at first, they want him to find employment after graduation. However, he says that “because I have a clear goal, I am confident to overcome difficulty of getting a job.” Also, “I will think about what I want to work after my second trip.” he adds.
