이 행사는 한·미 대학생들의 친선을 도모하고 국제적 리더십을 길러주기 위한 것이 목적이다. 한국에서는 부경대를 비롯 고려대, 대전대, 서울대, 서울시립대, 성균관대, 연세대, 이화여대, 전남대, 제주대, 한양대, 한국외대 등 12개 대학 25명의 대학생들이, 미국에서는 하버드대를 비롯 위스콘신대, 미시간대, 조지워싱턴대, 캘리포니아대 등 19개 대학 23명이 참가했다. 한·미 젊은이들은 5일 동안 부경대 기숙사에서 1:1로 짝을 맞추어 한 방을 쓰면서 ‘한계를 넘어(Beyond Boundaries)’를 주제로 원탁회의, 한국문화 특강, 기업체 탐방 등 다양한 학술 및 친선교류활동을 펼치며 우의를 다진다. 이날 행사에 참가한 소찬트라 멜 학생(24·노스센트럴칼리지)은 “이번 행사 준비 과정에서 보여준 한국 학생들의 열정과 추진력이 정말 놀랍다.”면서, “서로의 문화와 학술 정보를 체험할 수 있는 기회가 되길 기대한다.”고 말했다. 한국 대표로 참가한 장진구 학생(24·연세대학교)은 “이 행사를 통해 우리나라와 미국 학생들의 지속적인 교류를 위한 장을 마련하기 위해 힘쓰겠다.”고 밝혔다. 2008년 미국에서 처음 시작된 이 행사는 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 소재 비영리 교육기관인 국제학생회의(ISC)가 해마다 양국에서 번갈아 개최하는 국제 학술 문화교류 프로그램이다.<부경투데이> The 4th Korean-American student conference was held in the banquet room on the third floor of VISTAS Hotel in Daeyeon Campus in PKNU on July 8th at 5. The objective of this conference is to cultivate international friendship between Korea and America. In addition, this conference can help the students to get strong leadership. 25 university students at PKNU, Korea University, Daejeon University, Seoul National University, University of Seoul, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, Chonnam National University, Jeju National University, Hanyang University, Hankuk University of Foreign Sutdies participated in this conference. In addition, 23 American university students at Harvard Universiry, University of Wisconsin System, University of Michigan, The George Washington University, and University of California took part in this conference. Korean and American students will become a two-person team, and they are going to stay the same room in dormitory for 5 days. They can get close to each other by discussing something which main idea is ‘Beyond Boundaries’, attending a special lecture series on Korean culture, and visiting corporations during this period. One of the students who participated in this program, Sochantra Mel, who is 24, and a North Central College student, spoke as follows. “The passion and the driving force that Korean students showed us were really incredible while we were preparing this program together. I hope that it will be an opportunity to understand the different culture and to exchange the academic information.” Meanwhile, the Korean representative, Jang Jin Gu, who is also 24, and a Yonsei University student spoke as follows. “During this period, I am going to strive to provide a forum for continuous exchange between Korean students and American students.” As a kind of the international academic and cultural exchange program, ISC (International Student Conference) was begun by a non-profit educational institution which is located in Washington, D.C. in America in 2008 for the first time.
