            터키 흑해 해저에서 새롭게 확인된 머드 볼케이노(Mud Volcano:땅 속의 가스가 분출해 생긴 언덕) 이름이 ‘부산’으로 정해져 화제다.

            국립부경대학교 김대철 교수(에너지자원공학과)는 터키 도쿠즈에이륄대 귀나이 칩치 교수 연구팀과 공동으로 천부가스(바다 밑 얕은 지층에 묻힌 가스)를 연구하는 과정에서 터키 흑해에서 2개의 머드 볼케이노를 새롭게 발견해 각각 ‘부산(Busan)’과 터키의 도시 ‘이즈미르(Izmir)’라는 명칭을 각각 부여했다.
터키 해저 지형에 우리나라 도시 명칭이 붙은 것은 이번이 처음이다. 이에 따라 향후 이 지역 해도 작성 및 학술 연구 시 이 명칭이 사용된다.
김 교수는 이 연구결과를 담은 논문 ‘흑해 동쪽 탄성파 AVO 분석을 통해 새롭게 발견된 이즈미르와 부산 머드 볼케이노’를 지난 달 22일부터 27일까지 오스트리아 비엔나에서 열린 유럽 지구과학학회(European Geosciences Union) 2012 학술총회에서 칩치 교수와 공동으로 발표했다.
머드 볼케이노는 미래청정에너지로 주목받는 가스하이드레이트의 존재여부를 알 수 있는 해저지형으로 터키 흑해에 많이 발달해 있다.
김 교수는 지난 2002년 아제르바이잔에서 열린 천부가스 국제학회서 귀나이 칩치 교수와 인연을 맺은 이후 2009년부터 2년간 ‘한국 광양만과 터키 흑해 천부가스의 물리적 음향작적 특성연구’를 주제로 한국연구재단의 국제공동연구를 진행했다.
김 교수는 이 연구를 통해 흑해 머드 볼케이노를 비롯해 천부가스가 수중음향에 영향을 미쳐 해저 탐사 및 해군 작전을 방해할 수 있는 점을 연구한 논문 ‘여수만 가스함유 퇴적물의 물성 및 음향 특성’을 한국 지질학회에 발표하는 등 관련 연구를 진행해 왔다.<부경투데이> 

            Recently an exciting topic of conversation revolves around a mud volcano which emerged in the Black Sea that has been named “Busan”. 

            - A professor of PKNU, Dae-chul Kim, named a seabed’s vent in the international society “Busan”. The name of the Mud Volcano (the hill made from gas layers from the earth) found in the Black Sea in Turkey has been designated as ‘Busan’.
In Professor Kim (Department of Energy Resources Engineering) and Professor G.Cifci in Turkey, they found two mud volcanoes and named them ‘Busan’ and ‘Izmir’, a city of Korea and Turkey, respectively.
This is the first time for a seabed in Turkey to be named after a city in Korea. According to the findings, these names will be used to make Water Maps as well as to implement various research.
Professor Kim and Professor G.Cifci released their thesis titled, ‘Izmir and Busan Mud Volcano found through AVO Analysis’ during the 2012 European Geosciences Union in Vienna, Austria, 22nd-27th April.
A mud volcano is a kind of landform on the seabed the existence of gas hydrates, with clean energy and it is usually found in the Black Sea in Turkey.

            In 2002 Professor Kim and G.Cifci established a professional relationship at the International Society, and have thus proceeded with joint research themed, ‘Study on Properties of Natural Gas found in the Black Sea in Turkey and Gwang-yang Bay in Korea’
Another research project titled, ‘The Acoustic and Physical Properties on Sedimentary Layers Containing Natural Gas in Yeo-su Bay’ was proceeded by Professor Kim and released at the Geological Society of Korea. <Pukyong Today>
