            부경대학교(총장 박맹언)는 6월 5일 오전 11시 대연캠퍼스 동원장보고관 3층 리더십홀에서 키리바시공화국(Republic of Kiribati) 아노테 통 대통령(60세․Anote Tong)에게 명예공학 박사학위를 수여했다.

            아노테 통 대통령은 해수면 상승 등으로 수몰위험에 처한 키리바시공화국을 비롯한 태평양 도서국가의 위기를 국제사회에 알리는 등 온난화 방지를 위한 국제적인 환경보호 운동에 활발히 참여하고 한국과 키리바시공화국의 수산해양 분야 협력 및 발전에 기여한 공로로 명예박사학위를 받았다. 이날 그는 여수엑스포의 국제 환경포럼 참석차 방한했다.
키리바시공화국은 일반인에게는 잘 알려지지 않은 중부 태평양 서쪽에 있는 작은 섬나라이지만 수산해양 분야에서 중요한 지정학적 위치에 있어 국가적 차원에서 긴밀히 협력해야할 파트너의 위상을 가진 국가다.
아노테 통 대통령은 1990년대 수산부 장․차관을 역임할 때 한국 참치선망선단이 기존 조업지인 서부 태평양에서 키리바시공화국을 중심으로 한 동부에 신어장을 개척할 수 있도록 적극 지원했다. 이로써 동원그룹 등 우리나라 선단이 다른 조업국과의 경쟁에서 앞서 나갈 수 있었다. 그는 최근 우리나라 한국해양수산연수원 등에 파견 교육을 통해 수산 전문가 육성에 나서는 등 양국의 발전에 가교 역할을 하고 있다.
지구환경보호와 생명존중운동을 펴고 있는 부경대는 이번 명예박사 학위 수여를 계기로 키리바시공화국과 수산해양분야 교류 확대는 물론 지구 온난화 방지를 위한 국제사회의 동참을 이끌어내는 프로그램을 공동으로 운영할 계획이다.
아노테 통 대통령은 이날 학위수여식에서 “수산해양분야 특성화 대학인 부경대에서 명예박사학위를 받게 돼 영광.”이라면서, “부경대의 학문적 기반을 바탕으로 서로 힘을 합쳐 수산해양분야 협력은 물론 지구온난화문제 등 우리 앞에 놓인 험난한 과제를 슬기롭게 헤쳐가자.”고 말했다.<부경투데이>

            Anote Tong, the President of the Republic of Kiribati was awarded the honorary doctorate degree by PKNU for his distinguished services and cooperation on the prevention of global warming and marine industry.
Anote Tong, the President of the Republic of Kiribati was granted an honorary doctorate degree in Engineering on the 5th June at the leadership hall in the Jangbogo Building by the President  of PKNU, Mang-Un Park.
Anote Tong has actively participated in international movements for fighting global warming which inflicts the island states as well as his own country. Furthermore, he showed excellent leadership in the development of the marine industry between Korea and Kiribati. Tong paid a visit to the Expo in Yeo-su, Korea for the international seminar on the environment.

            When Tong served as a Vice-Minister in the 1990s, he proactively supported Koreas’ desire to explore new fisheries around the eastern area centering on Kiribati. As a result of his continuous efforts, Korean fishing fleets, including DongWon Corporation, were able to compete with other fishing fleets. He also acts as a bridge for both countrys’ development, dispatching and cultivating on marine industry to the Korean marine & fishery center.
Stimulated by that award granting, PKNU and Kiribati are planning to operate programs which encourage the community of nations to fight for global warming, whilst  broadening exchanges among other countries.
In the degree ceremony, Tong said, “I am very honored to receive a doctorate degree from PKNU whose curriculums are specialized in fisheries and oceans.” Furthermore, he stated, “I hope that painstaking challenges like global warming will be resolved through PKNU’s strong academic base. <PKNU today>
