             부경대학교 새해 달력을 배부하고 난 뒤, “11월의 그림이 가슴을 뭉클하게 한다.”는 반응이 많았다.

            햇빛이 서치라이트처럼 들어오는 빈 강의실에서 한 학생이 공부를 하고 있고, 그 뒤에 어떤 교수가 그림자처럼 서 있는 그림이다. 학생이 공부할 수 있도록 늘 지켜주고 있는 교수.
그 모델은 누구였을까? 바로 부경대 해양학과 허성회 교수다. 허 교수는 지난 10년 동안 2억 원을 모았다. 달마다 월급 등을 쪼개 모아서. 학생들에게 장학금 주려고. 

            허 교수가 그림자로 등장한 부경대 새해 달력 11월 주제는 ‘받은 것을 돌려주다’였다.
받은 것을 돌려주다? “학교로부터 많은 혜택을 받았으니 조금이나마 돌려주려는 것이다.” 허 교수의 말이다. 대부분의 사람들이 ‘적다’고 불만이고, 더 많이 얻기 위해 애쓰는 세상인데, 그걸 돌려주려는 마음은 어떤 것일까?
12월 31일, 해양과학공동연구소 2층에 자리한 그의 연구실을 찾았다. 2012년 마지막 날, 한 해를 마무리하는 그의 안부가 궁금했다.
자리를 잡고 앉자마자 그는 “허, 벌써 10년이 지났네요.”했다. 2002년 5월, 개교기념식 때 부경학술상 부상으로 받은 상금 500만원을 씨앗으로 시작된 그의 기부가 올해로 만 10년을 넘긴 것이다. 매달 월급에서 20만원씩 아껴 대학본부 장학기금 계좌로 이체하면서 모았고, 상금이나 각종 상여금 등 여윳돈이 생길 때마다 그 계좌로 꼬박꼬박 이체했다.
그렇게 스스로 장학기금을 차곡차곡 모으기 시작한 10년째인 지난 3월에는 그의 첫 장학생이 탄생했다. 발전기금을 빼고 순수 장학금으로 모인 돈이 1억이 됐고, 이 돈의 이자 360만원이 생긴 것이다. 이 돈은 해양학과 학생 4명에게 전달됐다.
장학금 수혜 대상도 특이하다. 성적이 우수한 학생에게는 안준다. 그 학생들은 학내 각종 장학금을 받고 있을 테니까. 그래서 허 교수는 가정형편이 어려운 학생들에게 장학금을 준다는 원칙을 세웠다. 아르바이트 하느라 성적은 좀 못나왔지만, 좀 도와주면 힘을 얻어 열심히 공부할 수 있는 그런 학생들에게.
장장 10년 동안 중단되지 않고 계속된 허 교수의 기부는 처음 어떻게 시작됐을까?
“당시 IMF로 실직하고 어려움을 겪고 있는 주변 사람들을 많이 보았어요. 그런데 저는 교수여서 다행히 그런 걱정 없이 살 수 있잖아요. 나의 직장인 학교가 정말 고맙구나 하는 감사한 마음이 들었어요. 그런데 학생이 있어야 대학도 있는 거니까, 내가 가르치는 학생들을 도와주는 것이 보답하는 것이다 하는 생각에서 장학금 모으기를 시작했지요.”
그의 목표는 2억 원이다. 그는 “현재 장학금으로 1억2천만 원이 쌓여있다.”면서, “3~4년 안에 2억 원을 달성할 수 있을 것 같다.”고 말했다.
장학기금 말고도 ‘학생들을 위해’ 허 교수가 하는 특별한 일들이 있다.
먼저 ‘독서운동’이 그것이다. 그는 3년 전부터 학생들을 위해 매년 30~40권의 책을 사비로 구입해 기증하고 있다. 이 책은 해양학과 사무실 책장에 누구라도 읽을 수 있도록 개방되어 있다. 지금까지 구입한 책은 200여권. 해양관련 전공 서적, 자기계발서, 자서전 등이 주류를 이룬다. 책은 도서관에도 많은데? 그는 “도서관까지 가지 않고도 가까운 데서 손쉽게 필요한 책을 접할 수 있도록 하면 조금이라도 더 많이 읽을 수 있겠지요.” 했다. 500권을 모으는 것이 목표다. 

            그가 학생들에게 유난히 강조하는 것은 책읽기다. 스스로 인생을 개척해갈 수 있는 삶의 기술, 그것을 발견하기 위해서는 책을 많이 읽어야한다는 것이 그의 신조다. ‘대학생활의 이해’라는 강의에서 그는 의무적으로 책을 5권씩 읽도록 한다. 다음 학기부터는 10권으로 늘일 계획.

            스터디그룹을 만들어주고 학생들의 멘토 역할을 해주는 것도 요즘 그의 중요한 일 목록 중의 하나다. 2학년 4팀, 3학년 1팀의 스터디그룹이 운영되고 있다. 팀당 5명씩 이루어진 스터디그룹은 매주 한 번씩 모여 해양학 관련 원서를 읽고 토론한다.

            그는 “우수한 해양학자들이 많이 나왔으면 하는 바람에서 스터디그룹을 꾸리게 됐다.”면서, “전공과 영어실력을 쌓아서 학생 스스로 높은 경쟁력을 가질 수 있도록 안내자 역할을 하고 있다.”고 말했다. “품이 많이 드는 일이긴 하지만 깊은 보람을 느낀다.”고 했다.
기부 이야기로 돌아가 보자. 그가 처음 기부하기로 하고 월급에서 돈을 따로 떼어내 모으기 시작한 2002년 그 때 그의 딸 2명이 대학에 다니고 있었다. 그리고 그들이 각각 올해, 그리고 지지난해 결혼하면서 그의 둥지를 날아갔다. 그렇게 굵직굵직하게 돈 드는 일도 많았을 텐데 어떻게 감당해왔을까?
그는 “주위 분들이 많이 도와주셔서 모든 일이 잘 지나갔다.”고 낮은 목소리로 조용히 말했다. “어려움도 있었지만, 보람이 더 많았다고 생각한다.”고 덧붙였다.
그가 이렇게 말했을 때, 어떤 여유로움이랄까, 텅 빈 충만함이랄까, 그런 느낌이 전해졌다. 이 느낌의 정체는 무얼까? 더 갖고 싶은 욕망을 누르고 베푸는 삶을 실천할 때 비로소 찾아오는 어떤 소중한 것이 아닐까 하고 생각해 보았다. <부경투데이>

            Donated part of his salary for 10 years

After the new year calendar was handed out, there were many comments about the picture for November which is especially touching.
One student is studying in an empty classroom while the sun is shining, and a professor is standing right behind him like a shadow. A guardian named a professor to help them study.
Who was the model for this picture? He is Professor Seonghoe Huh from the Department of Oceanography. He saved 200 million won over the past decade by saving a part of his monthly salary to donate for student scholarships.
The subject of the picture for the New Year November calendar was “giving back”.
At the end of last year, 31st December, we visited his office on the 2nd floor of the Ocean Science Research Building.
"It's already been 10 years," he said. May 2002, at the anniversary of Pukyong, his donation started with five million won from the prize of Pukyong scholarship awards, and it's been over 10 years. He gathered 200 thousand won from his monthly salary and deposited it into a scholarship account of Pukyong, He also contributed any prize money or bonuses into this account.
Therefore, the money piled up and it had reached up to a hundred million won, and the interest of it was around three million and 600 thousand won. This money has been delivered to 4 students in the Department of Oceanography.
The object of this scholarship is different from normal scholarships. This scholarship is not for the students with a high score, but for poor students, especially students who are studying and working a part-time job. So the help is needed indeed.
Why did Professor Huh decide to save money for the scholarships for over 10 years?
"I could see many people around me in trouble, especially people who lost their jobs in the IMF crisis. As you know, I didn't need to worry about that because I'm a professor. Because of that, I could feel thankful. Suddenly, I began to think that I needed to share my good fortune with Pukyong University students because my university job was stable due to them.
His goal was 200 hundred million won. He mentioned that it had piled up around 120 million won, so after 3 or 4 years, the goal would come true.
He also does other special affairs for students.
First of all, the "Reading Books Campaign" is one of his activities. As of 3 years ago, he donates around 30 books annually for students. These books are for anyone placed in the department office. Now around 200 books fill the bookshelf, mostly related to Oceanography and some autobiographies. This book donation is for the convenience of students in the building and to raise their accessibility to books because it is much closer than going to the library. His goal is to collect 500 books on that shelf.
What he especially emphasizes to students is the importance of reading books. One of the principles in his life is that in order to get a skill in life, reading books is essential. In his class "Understanding of University Life", reading five books is mandatory to get a score, and he is planning to increase the number of books to 10.
Making a study group and being their mentor are his tasks as well. Four teams of study groups made up of sophomores and one team of juniors are currently running. The group of five people has been meeting once a week and debating about oceanography after reading original edition major books.
He mentioned that he started to run the study groups hoping to train talented ocean scientists by guiding them to be competitive, and he feels that it is worthwhile even though it requires a lot of time and commitment.
Let's get back to the donation. In 2002, when he decided to save part of his salary, his two daughters were in university. They both got married this year and started their own families. So, how could he afford to help his family and contribute money to the student scholarship account?
