강남주(姜南周) 전 부경대학교 총장이 74세에 새내기 소설가로 등단했다.
자신의 표현대로 “고려장의 나이를 넘어서 신인 소설가의 명찰을 새로 달았다.” 그래서 이 ‘사건’은 문단 안팎의 화제가 되고 있다.
강 전 총장은 종합 계간문예지인 「문예연구」 제61회 신인문학작품 공모전에서 소설부문으로 당선했다. 수상작인 단편소설 ‘풍장의 꿈’은 최근 발간된 「문예연구」 여름호에 실렸다.
강 전 총장은 「해저의 숲」을 비롯 지금까지 9권의 시집을 상재한 원로시인이다. 「중심과 주변의 시학」등 평론집도 3권이나 펴냈다. 부경대학교 교수로, 총장으로 2004년 정년퇴임을 했고 ‘부산의 문화 수장자리’인 부산문화재단 대표도 역임했다.
그런 그가 왜 새내기 소설가로 등단한 것일까?
그는 당선소감에서 이렇게 말했다. “소설가가 되고 싶어서 그랬다. 그래서 고려장의 나이를 넘어서 ‘신인 소설가’의 명찰을 새로 달았다.”면서, “이 분야에서 새롭게 인정받았다는 것이 기쁘다.”고 밝혔다.

그의 나이에 새롭게 시작한다는 것은 어떤 의미였을까?
그는 “새로 시작한다는 말은 가능성을 새롭게 굴착한다는 말은 아닐까. 무모함이란 창조를 향해 도전한다는 뜻의 다른 말은 아닐까.”라고 말했다.
강 전 총장의 작품 ‘풍장의 꿈’에 대해 심사위원들은 “노년의 나이에 접어들면서 심각한 생의 화두로 마주치게 되는 죽음에 대한 성찰과 통찰을 보여주는 작품.”이라면서, “홀로 지내는 주인공의 거취를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 자식들과의 긴장과 갈등을 통해 죽음에 대한 철학을 예비하는 모습이 절실하면서도 뭉클했다.”고 평가했다.
강 전 총장은 “우리는 이미 고령화 사회에 진입했다. 앞으로 그 세계의 속살을 더듬어 보고 싶다.”고 말했다.

Kang Nam-Ju has been elected in thenovel field of 61stth contest of new writers’ literary works conducted by 「Literature Study」 which is a quarterly-publication literature magazine. The short story, ’The Dream of Aerial Burial’, the prize-winning novel of the contest, was published on 「Literature Study」 in a summer hiatus.
The former president is a veteran poet who has published 9 books of poetry until now such as 「Woods Under The Sea」. He has also has published 3 books of essays in criticism such as 「Center and Periphery of Poetics」. He retired in 2004 from his job as a professor and the president position of Pukyong, and held the chief position of at the Busan Cultural Foundation, his formal title was which has meaning of "the chief of Busan culture".
So,Then why did he decide to become a rookie novelist? In the speech on being elected, he said he wanted to be a novelist. "Over the age of Goryeojang, I finally became a new novelist. I’m so happy to be recognized as a new novelist in this field."
What does it mean to start a new thing at his age? is the meaning of starting new thing in his age? "Starting a new thing means that excavating something new. Recklessness also means that challenging for creation in some way," the former president said.
The judges of the contest evaluated ’The Dream of Aerial Burial’ as the a novel that showeding introspection and discernment about death, as the main character enters old age and encounters the death naturally. They also said that the novel is very touching by showing the main character’s preparation for death through the children of his’ tension and conflict about his attitude while he lives alone.
"We are already in an aging society. I want to show that society’s inside," the former president Kang said. There is already much attention to the dark side of the aging society drawn by the 74 years old novelist who writes with the sensitivity of a poet.<Pukyong today>
