부경대학교 정보전산원장 김성운 교수(정보통신공학과)가 또 제자 소식을 전해왔다. 제자 황진호 씨가 IBM 왓슨연구소에 들어갔다는 것이다. 지난 9월 미국 Texas A&M University 컴퓨터공학과 조교수로 임용된 그의 제자 이석진 씨에 이은 경사다.(교수님 방에 물이 좋은가?^^)
IBM 왓슨(T. J. Watson)연구소는 어떤 곳인가?
IBM은 세계적으로 12개의 연구소에 25만 명의 연구원 및 기술자들이 기술의 경계를 무너뜨리기 위해서 주력하고 있다. 매년 60억불의 연구 예산을 사용하고 있고, 20년간 미국의 최대 특허 출원 회사 자리를 지켜왔다.
특히 미국 뉴욕에 위치한 T. J. Watson 연구소는 모든 연구소의 중심에서 진두지휘하는 연구소다. 미국에서도 최고의 엘리트 집단으로 이루어진 왓슨 연구소는 기술 혁신이 이루어지는 진원지라 할 수 있다.
이런 엄청난(?) 곳에 황진호 동문(34)은 어떻게 들어가게 되었을까? 궁금해서 그에게 이메일을 보냈고, 수일 후 바로 그의 답장이 왔다.
그 답장 중에 다음의 말이 가슴으로 훅 들어왔다. ‘후배들에게 도움말 한마디 해주세요.’에 대한 그의 답이었다.
“저도 한 때 서울에서 대기업에 다닐 때는 지방대라는 말이 정말 듣기 싫었던 적이 있었습니다. 하지만 돌아보면 그것은 전부 자격지심이었습니다. 결국 답은 ‘자신을 증명’하는 것이었습니다. 자신의 한계는 무궁무진 하다는 것을 절대 잊지 말고 항상 한계를 넘어서는 것을 즐기시기 바랍니다. 저는 지금까지 어떤 부경대 선배님도 가지 않은 길을 가고 있다는 자긍심으로 살아가고 있습니다. 언제가 될지 모르지만 부경대 후배를 미국에서 만날 수 있는 날이 오면 좋겠습니다. 파이팅!”

‘자신을 증명’하는 것! 과연 그는 어떻게 자신을 증명했을까?
그는 부경대 정보통신공학과 98학번이다. 석사도 같은 과에서 2005년에 마쳤다. 그리고 미국으로 건너가 죠지워싱턴대학 컴퓨터공학과에 입학, 2013년 졸업했다.
어떻게 그 어려운 공부를 해냈나? 하는 질문에 대한 그의 답은 이랬다.
“두 가지 문장이 떠오르네요. ‘안되면 되게 하라’와 ‘천재는 99%의 노력으로 이루어진다.’ 결국 끈질기게 물고 늘어지면서, 결과가 나올 때까지 포기하지 않는 것이 중요한 것 같습니다. 세상의 모든 일은 좋든 싫든 결과가 나게 마련이기 때문입니다. 하지만 중간에 포기하게 되면 결과도 모른 채 완전히 배우지 못하기 때문입니다. 제 나이 쯤 되면 매사에 신중해지기 때문에 어렸을 때보다 큰 실수가 그렇게 많이 생기지 않지만, 생긴다면 그건 또 다른 배움의 기회 아니겠습니까?”
수없이 많은 낮과 밤, 어떤 알 수 없는 딱딱한 외로움을 뚫고 나온 그의 단단한 정신이 느껴지는 듯하다.
그는 또 목표가 확실한 학생이었다고 한다. 그는 “3년 안에 박사를 받고 나가야겠다는 확고한 목표가 있었다.”면서, “그 목표를 이루기 위해서 매사에 적극적으로 할 수 있었던 것 같다.”고 말했다. 그래서 2년 반이라는 짧은 시간 동안 10편의 논문 작업을 함께하고, 3번의 학회 발표를 했다고 한다. 이에 대해 그는 “돌아보니 정말 기적 같은 일을 한 것 같아서 뿌듯하다.”고 했다. 그 중 한 학회에서는 최고 학회 논문도 수상했다. 결국 3년 안에 그는 박사 학위를 받았다.
‘Improving and Repurposing Data Center Resource Usage with Virtualization’가 그의 박사학위 논문제목이다. 서버 가상화를 통한 데이터 센터 자원 활용 개선.
그는 “클라우드 컴퓨팅의 가장 핵심이 되는 기술이 서버 가상화(Server Virtualization)인데 가상화 환경에서는 CPU, Memory, Disk, Network 같은 자원도 가상화되기 때문에 이를 잘 관리하는 것이 정말 중요한 문제.”라면서, “이 논문은 주어진 환경에서 최대한의 이윤을 만들어 내기 위한 효율적인 자원 관리 방안.”이라고 소개했다.
이런 그의 전공은 요즘 IBM 왓슨연구소의 선도 기술과 부합한다. 황 동문에 따르면 왓슨 연구소는 핫이슈가 되고 있는 클라우드 컴퓨팅과 빅데이터, 인지(Cognitive) 컴퓨팅 분야를 선도하고 있다고 한다. 이 분야 연구논문의 수와 질은 다른 회사를 압도하고 있다는 것이 그의 설명이다.
이 연구소에 들어가려는 경쟁은 워낙 치열해 인터뷰 과정이 매우 힘들었다고 한다. 인터뷰만 이틀이 걸렸다고 한다. 그 인터뷰 과정을 들어보자.
“첫날에는 인터뷰를 할 사람들과 관심 있는 사람들이 참여한 가운데 1시간가량 연구 방향에 대해서 발표를 하고, 그 이후에 질의응답을 했습니다. 가장 긴장되는 순간입니다. 그리고 나머지 시간은 24명의 면접관(연구원, 임원 포함)들과 한 사람 당 40분씩 1대 1로 토론을 하는 형식입니다. 인터뷰가 끝나면 모두 결과를 취합하여 최종 결정을 내리게 됩니다. 마치고 나니 몸속의 진이 모두 빠져버린 느낌이었습니다.”
그러고 보니 아, 그는 영어를 잘 하겠구나.^^ 그는 어떻게 영어를 공략했을까?
“미국 사람들은 동양 사람이 완벽한 영어를 쓰는 것을 기대하지 않습니다. 그렇기 때문에 자신이 어떤 말을 할지 머릿속에 들어있다면 어떤 식으로든 전달하게 돼 있습니다. 결국 저의 영어에 대한 고민은 ‘할 말’을 생각하는 것이었지 어떻게 유창한 발음을 할까는 아니었던 것 같습니다. 이와 더불어 어떤 말을 쓸까가 중요하지, 완벽한 문법으로 쓰는 것은 두 번째 문제였습니다. 물론 이런 것들이 가능하려면 우선 ‘듣기’가 어느 정도 완성이 되어야겠죠? 제 생각에 3년가량 꾸준히 듣기 연습을 하면 귀가 열리는 것 같습니다.”
그의 꿈은 무엇일까? 그는 왓슨연구소의 클라우드 컴퓨팅 인프라스트럭쳐 마이그레이션(Cloud Computing Infrastructure Migration) 팀의 연구원이다. 마이그레이션은 기존의 서버 환경을 클라우드로 옮기는데 필요한 방법을 나타내는 용어.
연구자의 길을 선택한 이상 그는 이 분야에 최고가 되는 것이 목표라고 했다.
“어느 학회에 참석했는데, 다른 학교 학생이 비슷한 분야를 하고 있어서 얘기를 하다가 제가 제출한 논문을 읽어 본적이 있냐고 하니까 ‘그게 너였냐’며 너무나 반가워했습니다. 이런 경험들이 많은 것을 말해주는 것 같습니다. 결국 그 분야에 최고가 되는 것은 같은 분야의 연구원들에게 인정을 받는 것이라는 생각입니다. 우선은 현재 함께 일을 하고 있는 팀 연구원들에게 인정을 받고, 그 이후에는 다른 부서, 연구소 전체, 미국, 세계에서 인정을 받고 싶습니다.”

Kim Sung-Un, the head of the information & computer center of Pukyong National University, reported news about his student. He said that Hwang Jin-ho, who used to be his student, entered the IBM Watson Laboratory. This is good news right after the professor’s other student Lee Suk-Jin was appointed as the assistant professor of Texas A&M University of America last September. There should be something in the professor Kim's laboratory.
So, what is IBM Watson (T. J. Watson) Laboratory?
IBM is focusing on breaking the boundary technique with 250 000 researchers in 12 laboratories. It is using 6 billion dollars of the research budget annually, and has been ranked as the most patent-application company in America for 20 years.
The T. J. Watson Laboratory in New York is the leading laboratory at the center of all IBM labs. The laboratory consisted of the best elite group of America is a starting place of technology innovation.
So, how can the alumni of Pukyong National University enter the laboratory? We sent an e-mail to ask about it, and we got the answer within days.
In his answer, one paragraph was very touching. It was the answer of a sentence for his juniors of PKNU.
"When I was working for a major company in Seoul, I didn't like to hear that I was from a local university. However, that was just an inferiority complex. The answer was to just prove my ability to other people. I hope that my juniors know that they have no limitations on their abilities and they should enjoy jumping up to the next step. I'm living with a confidence that I'm living my way what any other seniors of the university have never been. I hope that I can meet one of my juniors from PKNU one day."
"Proving yourself!" So, how did he prove himself to people?
He graduated from the department of information and communication engineering in PKNU in 1998. He finished graduate school in 2005, which was also in the same department. Then, he went to America and entered the computer engineering department of The George Washington University and he graduated in 2013.
The answer of his long and tough study life was as follows:
"There were two sentences that were always in my heart, 'Make impossible as possible' and 'genius is 99 percent of perspiration.' I think that never giving up until the result has come out is the most important thing. Everything in this world has a result whether it is good or bad, but if one gives up in the middle, they can't learn anything when they don't know the results of their efforts. At my age, I don’t make many mistakes because I have become more careful than before, but I think that when a mistake happens, that could be another chance to learn."
It shows that his strong will power covered with loneliness through some countless days and nights.
He said that he had a clear goal when he was a student. He wanted to finish his doctor's degree in three years, so he studied hard to achieve his goal. He did 10 thesis work and 3 conference presentations for two and a half years. He said that it is almost a miracle that he did all those things in such a short time. He got the best thesis prize in a conference, and finally completed his doctor's degree in three years.
The subject of his thesis paper for his doctor's degree is ‘Improving and Re-purposing Data Center Resource Usage with Virtualization'.
He said that the most important technology of cloud computing is controlling 'server virtualization' because resources such as CPU, memory, disk, and network can be virtualized in the virtualization environment. The thesis is about an effective resource management plan with the best profit from the given environment.
In addition, his major is linked with the Watson laboratory's leading technology. Mr. Hwang said that the laboratory is the leading group in cloud computing and big data cognitive computing fields which is a big issue recently. He said that the paperwork of the lab is overwhelming compared to other companies in the aspect of its quantity and quality.
The competition for entering this lab was quite strong, and the interview procedure was also long and tough. Two days were spent just for the interview. Let's check the interview procedure.
"On the first day, all the interviewees interested in this job attended and gave a presentation about their research plan for an hour, and then there was question and answer time after that. That was the most nervous moment. Then, the rest of time was for one-on-one discussions for 40 minutes with an interviewer, including researchers and executives. After finishing the interview, interviewers made a decision, combining all of the results. He said, “ I felt like I was exhausted after finishing the interview."
As he is working in America, he might be good at English. How did he find a way to complete his English?
"Americans don't expect that Asian's English would be perfect. If you have something to say in your head, it can be delivered in any way. Therefore, my effort for English was not about how to pronounce well, but more about how to say what I was thinking. In addition, which word to use was more important than speaking with perfect grammar. For sure, listening should be *(completed) to make these things possible. I think that practicing listening consistently for 3 years has made my ear more receptive to English."
So, what is his dream? He is a researcher of the Cloud Computing Infrastructure Migration team in Watson Laboratory; migration means that the way needed to move original server environment to the cloud.
He said that being at the top of this field is his goal as he decided to be a researcher.
"One day, I attended a conference. I met a student from another school, and we talked a lot as we were studying similar fields. I asked him about my thesis and he was surprised that the paper he read was mine. This kind of experience is quite meaningful to me. At the end, being at the top of a field is the way that I can gain recognition from other researchers. At first, I want to receive recognition from the researchers in my team that I'm working for at the moment, and then I want to gain it from other departments, labs, America and the world."
