사실 이처럼 준엄한 말이 어디 있겠는가? 게을러지려는 자신을 끊임없이 채근하고 일깨우는 말. 올해 일흔다섯의 강 전 총장에게 이 말은 어떤 의미일까? 최근 나온 그에 대한 인터뷰 기사 속에서 이 말의 배경을 느낄 수 있었다. 나아가 그의 삶에 대한 자세, 삶을 살아가는 비기(秘技)를 알아챌 수 있을 것 같았다. 이 인터뷰 기사는 200자 원고지로 장장 100장을 넘는 장문이었다. 부산시가 발간하는 월간 소식지 <부산이야기> 최근호에 요약본이, 부산시 인터넷신문 BUVI News(http://news.busan.go.kr)에 원본이 실렸다. 인터뷰의 꼭지 제목은 「‘아름다운 노년’ 강남주 작가에게 노년의 길을 묻다」였다. 인터뷰에서 밝힌 그의 근황을 들어보자. “소설 쓰기에 바쁘다. 단편 8편을 완성, 문예지 기고를 준비 중이다. 중편 ‘유하마도(柳下馬圖)’, 일본 시코쿠(四國) 한 절에 있는 조선시대 동래 화가 변박의 그림에 관한 소설도 200자 500매를 넘겼고.” 계속 인터뷰 기사를 따라가 보자. 그는 청·장년 시절 언론사 기자 생활을 하다, 불혹(不惑) 즈음 대학교수(부경대 전신 부산수산대)로 전신, 대학총장(부경대)에서 정년퇴임했다. 그 짧지 않은 세월, 그는 본업 외에도 결코 게으르지 않은 시인·수필가·문학평론가였다. 정년퇴임 후의 노년기, 그는 부산문화재단 초대 대표와 조선통신사문화사업회 집행위원장을 맡아, 부산 문화행정의 전환기적 변화를 이끌며 국제문화교류에도 단연 앞장섰다. ‘옛날 같으면 고려장 나이’ 75세에, 기어이 새내기 소설가로 등단했다. 최근 계간문예지 「문예연구」 제61회 신인문학작품 공모전 소설 부문에서 당선한 것이다. 그가 다시 소설가로 등단한 이유, 70대 중반에 새롭게 시작한다는 것은 어떤 의미인가? 그는 이렇게 말했다. “새로 시작한다는 말은 가능성을 굴착한다는 의미다. 무모함은 창조를 향해 도전한다는 뜻의 다른 말이 아닐까 싶다. 사람은 자신에게 내재해 있는 가능성을 다 발굴하지 못하고 생을 끝내는 경우가 허다한 것 같다. 나 자신도 그러고 있는지 모른다. 소년시절부터 소설을 쓰고 싶었다. 그러나 공부하고 취직하고 강의한다고 거기 시간을 다 쏟았다. 이제 늙었다. 그러나 하고 싶었던 소설쓰기는 그대로 남아 있다.”고. 이처럼 왕성한 활동의 원동력은 무엇일까? “정신이다. 우두커니 앉아 있어도 하루는 가고, 뭔가를 향해 열심히 달려도 하루는 간다. 어느 것을 택할 것인가? 한번 달려보자, 나는 이쪽을 택했을 뿐이다. 그러나 이제 겨우 열 편 정도의 작품을 썼을 뿐, 아직 이루어 놓은 것은 없다. 그렇기에 열심히 하지 않으면 안 된다. 아무것도 이루지 못하고 생이 끝난다 하더라도 무엇이 억울할 것인가. 가능한 그날까지 가보자는 생각, 그 생각이 나를 주저앉아 있지 못하게 할 뿐이다.” 이런 활동을 가능하게 하는 그의 건강 유지법은? 아침에 눈을 뜨면 잠자리에서 일어나 그대로 앉은 채 큰 심호흡을 10여 차례 반복한다. 특별한 요령과 구체적 방법이 있는 것은 아니지만 숨을 복부 깊숙이 들이 쉬었다 천천히 뿜어내는 복식호흡이다. 그 뒤는 어깨를 흔들어 보고 손발도 비벼 본다. 그런 뒤 냉수 한 컵을 마신다. 그저 그렇게 해보니까 찌뿌드드한 몸이 개운해 지는 것 같아 시작했다고 한다. 지금은 빼놓을 수 없는 습관이다. 식사를 제 때 하는 것, 너무 많이 먹지 않는 것도 빼놓을 수 없다. 그의 건강비결은 건강문제에 신경을 쓰지 않고 규칙적 생활과 몸을 바삐 움직이는 것이라고 한다. 그는 이 인터뷰에서 학생들에게 시류에 영합하지 말 것을 강조했다. 그는 “한 우물을 파는 자세가 필요하다. 학문에 인기학문과 비인기학문이 따로 있는 것이 아니다. 그 학문을 연마하는 사람들의 자세가 중요하다.”고 말했다. 이 말은 ‘취직 잘 안 되는 학과’ 국문학을 전공하고 있는 제자(그는 국어국문학과 교수였다.)에게 ‘학문의 자세’를 강조한 것이다. 아무리 하찮게 보여도 한 학문에서는 모든 학문의 알파와 오메가를 발견할 수 있다, 국문학과가 취직이 썩 잘 되지 않는 학과지만, 사실 국문학과만큼 모든 분야에서 필요로 하는 학과도 흔치 않다, 그런 얘기다. 이 말은 다른 학과에도 그대로 적용될 것이다. 인생을 살아가는 자세에 대해서도 그는 “사람은 더불어 사는 것, 항상 다른 사람의 사고를 인정하고 남에게 상처를 주지 않는 삶을 살아야 할 것.”이라고 학생들에게 당부했다. 문학하는 자세에 대해 그는 “문학은 혼자 하는 것.”이라고 말했다. 그는 “문학 모임에 우우 몰려다니는 것보다는 시를 쓰는 것이 생산적이란 생각을 많이 했다. 지금도 가능하면 문학행사에 나가, 함께 소주 한잔 마시고 오는 일은 삼가고 있다.”고 한다. 그는 “나는 나의 내일을 모른다. 누가 언제 죽을지를 알 수 있는가. 죽는 날까지 노력하는 신인으로 남고 싶다. 그러다가 미완의 작품 앞에서 숨을 거두기로서니 무슨 여한이 있겠나.”고 했다. 그러면서 그는 앞으로의 계획에 대해, “계속 글을 쓸 생각이다. 남과 다투지 않고 살겠다. 나는 지금 무엇을 하고 있는가. 새로 시작하는 일을 두려워하지 않고 끊임없이 자신을 되돌아보면서 살 수 있었으면 좋겠다.”고 밝혔다. 인터뷰어는 이렇게 물었다. “기자, 교수, 총장, 시인, 문화행정가에, 소설가까지, 정말 다양한 인생역정이다. 어떤 사람으로 기억되고 싶은가?” 그는 이렇게 답했다. “어떤 사람으로 기억되어도 좋다. ‘치졸한 사람’으로 살지 않았다는 기억만 해 준다면.” 삶을 보다 원숙하게 살아가고 싶은 것이다. 어려운 일이지만 우리의 소망도 그렇지 않은가? 그러기 위해 그는 매순간 ‘지금 뭘 하고 있지?’ 하며 스스로를 돌아보는 것이리라. □ 강남주는 누구? He worked as a journalist of a press when he was young, and he changed his job as a professor of Busan Fisheries College (former university of PKNU) when he was 40 years old. After that, he worked as the president of the university and retired on reaching retirement age. For quite long lifetime, he has been poet, essayist, and literary critic as side works without being lazy on his own job. After retirement, he had been in charge of representative director of Busan Cultural Foundation and manager of Chosun Tongsinsa Cultural Business Team, so he led exchange of international culture through changes of Busan cultural administration.
At 75 years old, which is old enough to do Goryeojang in Goryeo Dynasty period, he became a new novelist, He recently won the novel contest of the 61th Rookie Literary Works of 「Study of Literature」 which is a literary magazine published quarterly.
What is the reason of becoming a novelist and the meaning of having a new start at the middle of 70's?
He said that the new starting means that excavating a possibility. "Another meaning of recklessness is challenging for creation. People usually don't know their inherent potential and finish their life. I might be same with them. I wanted to write novel from when I was young, but I spent all of my time on studying, employment, and teaching. I'm old now, but I still have a passion about writing novel," he said.
Then, what is his driving force of furious activity?
"It is my attitude and mind. A day shall be passed whatever I waste it or do my best for something. Which side should I choose, then? I just decided to do my best for things I like for the given time. I just wrote down ten pieces of literature, but I have nothing achieved yet. Therefore, I should work hard not to regret my life at the end of my life. The thought that I run until I can run, that is the force of making me keep going," he said.
Then, how does he care his health?
When he wakes up in the morning, he sits up the place where he slept and take a deep breath for ten times. There is no special way or procedure of it, but just taking a deep breath with abdominal breathing. Then, he moves his shoulder and shakes his hands and legs. As the last, he drinks a cup of cold water. It makes him refreshed and wake up, so it has been changed as his important habit in the morning. Eating meals on time and not too much is also a way of his caring himself.
The secret of his health is moving his body busily in his regular life without concerning his health too much.
On the interview, he emphasized that students shouldn't accommodate to trend. He said that focusing on one thing is important. He said that there is not popular or unpopular study, but the attitude toward the study makes it.
His saying is for his students who are studying Korean language and literature (he used to be professor of the major) which is not good major for getting a job by emphasizing 'the attitude to a study'. Even though a study looks unimportant, the study has alpha and omega which are in every studies. The major of Korean language and literature doesn't seem good for getting a job, but actually it is in need of every fields of industry. It can be applied to other majors as well.
He also said about a way of living life that we need to accept other's opinions and don't hurt them as people should live together.
He mentioned that literature should be done alone. He thinks that writing poem is more productive rather than attending literature meetings. He is attending literature event, but he tries to avoid dining with Soju with others.
"I don't know about tomorrow. Does anyone know when they will die? I just want to be the hard-working rookie until I die. If I can die in front of my unfinished novel, I won't have any regret about my life at all," he said.
He also mentioned about his rest of life plan that he wants to keep writing without conflicts with others and to live taking a look himself constantly without hesitating in front of new start with the sentence 'what are you doing'.
The interviewer asked like this: you've been lived various ways such as journalist, professor, president, poet, cultural administrator, and novelist, so what kind of person do you want to be remembered?
He answered that he doesn't care he is remembered as which kind of person. He said he just wants other people to remember me who lived his life without shame.
He wants to live his life more maturely. It is difficult for sure, but we know that that is our hope as well. For that, we need to ask every time what we are doing with taking a look ourselves.
