올해 구순이 된 노학자가 평생 가욋돈 6억 원을 제자들에게 장학금으로 지급한 사실이 알려져 화제다.
가욋돈은 그에게 월급 말고 생긴 수입을 말한다.
주인공은 지난 1991년 정년퇴임한 부경대학교 김인배 명예교수(양식학과).
12일 김 교수는 자신이 이사장으로 있는 (재)양식개발장학회를 해산하고 남은 기금 2억3백44만4천656원을 부경대에 발전기금으로 기부했다.
연로한 김 교수가 1988년 자신이 창립한 장학회를 이제 더 이상 운영할 여력이 없어 해산하게 된 것.
그런데 이 기금에 얽힌 사연이 눈길을 끈다.
우리나라 양식학계의 ‘태두’로 꼽히는 김 교수는 교수생활 40여 년 동안 월급 말고 생긴 가욋돈은 집에 가져가지 않는 것이 원칙이었다고 한다.
이 장학회 창립기금 1억5천만 원은 김 교수가 농촌개발사업을 지원한 UN식량농업기구(FAO)의 특별 요청으로 1972년부터 양어 전문가로 활약하며 FAO로부터 받은 월급과 각종 수당, 출장비 등을 꼬박꼬박 모은 것이다.
심지어 1991년 정년퇴임식 때 제자들이 고맙다고 그에게 모금해준 3,200만 원도 장학회 기금으로 넣었다고 한다.
평생 그의 ‘일방적 기부’를 참으며 내조해온 그의 부인은 나중에 그 사실을 전해 듣고 ‘퇴임하면서까지 그래야만 하느냐, 장학회에 가서 살지 집엔 왜 들어왔느냐’고 언성을 높였다고 한다.
이런 돈이 새끼를 쳐서 장학회 창립 후 28년 동안 학생들에게 전달된 장학금은 무려 3억9천8백52만1천500원.
이 돈과 이번에 부경대에 기부한 2억3백44만4천656원을 합쳐 그의 기부액은 6억 원에 이른다.
1949년 부경대 전신 부산수산대 수산생물학과를 졸업한 그는 이 대학 교수로 40년 넘게 연구와 후학양성에 매진하면서 양식분야 학문과 기술발전을 이끌어왔다.
어류양식에 사용되는 물을 반복적으로 정화, 재사용해 환경오염을 막을 수 있도록 개발한 그의 ‘순환여과식 양식기술’은 1987년 7월 호주 TV네트워크의 ‘Beyond 2000’이라는 프로그램에 세계 10대 미래기술의 하나로 선정돼 방송되기도 했다.
김 교수는 퇴임 후에도 우리나라의 좁은 국토와 경제 사회적 상황에서 지속가능한 미래지향적 폐쇄식 양식기술 연구개발에 열중하고 있다.
요즘 젊은이들에게 전할 말을 부탁하자 그는 “젊은 시절 해방에다 전쟁통이어서 학교서 제대로 못 배워 수학, 영어는 물론이고 건축기술, 도서관 사서업무까지도 독학으로 익혔던 일, 남들이 아닌 어제의 나와 경쟁한다는 생각으로 노력했던 점, 내가 하는 일은 일류라야 한다는 자부심으로 일했던 점이 기억에 남는다.”고 말했다.
그는 “특히 돈 된다고 아무 일이나 하면 안 된다.”고 강조했다.
한편 부경대는 그가 기부한 돈을 김인배 장학금이라는 명칭으로 매년 500만 원씩 학생들에게 지급하기로 했다.<부경투데이>
Nothing’s More Beautiful Than Professor Kim
- A scholar who donated a fortune that was saved throughout his lifetime
A 90-year-old scholar is drawing attention for his 600 million won donation as a scholarship to his students. The money came from his extra income except for his salary, and was saved throughout his lifetime.
His name is Kim In-bae, Honorary Professor of Department of Fish Farming of Pukyong National University, who retired in 1991.
On 12 January, Professor Kim donated ₩203,444,656 to PKNU as a development fund. It was remaining balances from the Fish Farming Development Scholarship Association after it was winded up, for which he worked as a chairman. The association was founded by himself in 1988 and disorganized due to his retirement.
The story about his donation is interesting.
Professor Kim, who is considered as an authority in fish farming of Korea, had a rule. During his 40 years of teaching, he never brought his extra money home.
He took an active part in Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from 1972 as a specialist of fish rearing. He saved all the money coming from FAO, and this 150 million won became foundation money for the scholarship association.
His students collected 32 million won and delivered it to him at his retirement ceremony in 1991, and it was also contributed to the scholarship.
His wife has understood and supported the professor’s “unconditional” donation all her life, but after she heard about the farewell money, she finally scolded him to go stay at the scholarship association not to come back home.
The money earned interest. As a result, since the establishment of the association, the amount of scholarship delivered to the students for 28 years was total of ₩398,521,500.
Adding this to the donation to PKNU this time, the total amount of his donation reaches 600 million won.
Professor Kim, who graduated Department of Marine Biology of Busan Fisheries University in 1949, the previous name of PKNU of the present, was professor of the same university for over 40 years. He has led the academic and technical development of fish farming through consistent research and teaching.
He developed Water Recycling Fish Rearing System, which can repeatedly purify and reuse water from fish farming and prevent environmental pollution. It was aired in July 1987 on ‘Beyond 2000,’ a seminar series of Australian TV Network, as one of the world’s top 10 future technologies.
Even after the retirement, Professor Kim is intent on researching and developing sustainable and future-oriented closed fish farming system, which is suitable for the geographical and socio-economic environment of Korea.
Being asked to leave a short message for the youths, he said, “I remember my old days. It was time of independent and war. I had to learn everything on my own, from building techniques to librarian works, not to mention school subjects such as maths and English. I tried my best to compete with myself of yesterday, not with other people. I worked with a pride that I always contribute to top notch jobs,” He also emphasized, “Do not take any job only to make money.”
Pukyong University named the donated money Kim In-bae Scholarship, and decided to give 5 million won to the students every year. <Pukyong Today>
