부경대학교(총장 김영섭)는 10일 재미 교포 사업가인 강세흥 SKS 트레이딩 회장(워싱턴 소재‧77세)에게 명예수산학박사 학위를 수여했다. 지난 51년 동안 미국에서 수산업을 해온 강 회장은 미이용 수산물의 이용방안 개발과 한국 수산물의 대미 수출 등 수산업 발전에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 이 학위를 받았다. 강 회장은 1964년 부경대 전신 부산수산대 제조학과를 졸업하고 1966년 미국으로 건너가 워싱턴대학에서 식품공학을 전공해 학사와 석사학위를 받았다.
그가 이 논문에서 제시한 코끼리조개의 성분과 품질변화 및 요리법 등 연구내용이 시애틀타임즈에 대서특필되면서 워싱턴 주를 중심으로 코끼리조개가 고급 식자재로 큰 인기를 끌게 되었던 것. 특히 그는 1980년 한국의 삼원어업과 한‧미간 최초의 합작기업(New Venture Fisheries)을 시애틀에서 창업하여 1978년 200해리 경제수역 선포 후 까다로워진 한국의 은대구 어업의 길을 텄다. 이는 우리가 해외어장에 직접 진출해 조업하던 전통방식에서 처음으로 벗어나 성공한 수산업의 해외합작사업 모델로 평가되고 있다. 그는 1983년 SKS 트레이딩을 설립하면서 한국인으로는 처음으로 미국 서북부 지역에서 수산업에 뛰어들어 오늘날 수산물의 생산‧가공‧이용뿐만 아니라 아시아와 미주 및 유럽 전역을 무대로 하는 국제적인 수산물 종합무역회사로 성장시켜 한국인의 명예를 높였다. 그는 이 같은 공적으로 지난 2008년 부경대로부터 ‘자랑스러운 부경인상’을 받았다. 이날 오전 11시 부경대 수산과학대학 5층 국제회의실에서 열린 학위수여식에서 김영섭 총장은 식사를 통해 “언제나 새로운 가치를 향한 도전과 창조로 점철된 강 회장님의 삶은 오늘날의 청년들에게 훌륭한 롤 모델.”이라면서, “우리 젊은이들이 도전할 곳은 바로 오대양 육대주라는 사실을 생생하게 일깨워주신 강 회장님께 명예박사학위를 드리게 되어 영광.”이라고 말했다. 이에 강 회장은 답사에서 “용호만의 파란 파도와 연결된 푸른 하늘을 보며 친구들과 잔디밭에 앉아 꿈을 꾸고 대화를 나누던 대학시절의 시간들이 생각난다.”면서, “그 소울서칭(Soul-searching)의 시절이 저의 생애에 하나의 큰 축복이었다.”고 말했다. 그는 “스페인풍 지붕을 가진 건물이 있던 아름답고 아담한 이 캠퍼스에서 가꾸어진 조그마한 비전이 젊은 시절 미국에서 수산학을 공부하고 또 지금까지 수산업을 할 수 있는 밑바탕이 됐다.”면서 “이렇게 귀한 학위를 주셔서 정말 감사하다. 이 학위는 저에게 용기를 갖고 꿈을 갖고 살라는 소중한 메시지로 기억될 것.”이라고 소감을 밝혔다. <부경투데이> PKNU (President Kim Young-seup) presented a doctoral honorary degree in the field of fisheries science to President Kang Se-heung SKS Trading Co. (77 years old, Washington) on April,10. Kang has been a fishery business in the US for 51 years and has received his degree for his contribution to the development of fisheries including the development of a plan for the utilization of unutilized aquatic products and the export of Korean fishery products to the United States. In 1964, Kang graduated from PKNU, formerly National Fisheries University of Busan, and went to the United States in 1966, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in food engineering from the University of Washington. His master’s thesis, "Study on Geoduck Clam in Washington State: Composition, Quality Changes and Utilization", published in 1971, as Geoducks looks like an elephant nose and it’s clam meat sticks out from its shell, many people didn’t much like, but it was raised as a high-quality well-being food not only for Americans but also for world food lovers today. In his thesis, the composition, quality changes and utilization were featured in the Seattle Times, and it became popular as a high quality food material centering around Washington State. Especially, he founded Sam-won fishing industry in 1980 and the first joint venture between Korea and the United States (New Venture Fisheries) in Seattle, paving the way for South Korean fisheries after the declaration of 200 nautical miles in 1978. It is regarded as a model for the overseas joint venture business of the successful fishery industry, which is the first to escape from the traditional way of entering overseas fishing grounds. He established SKS Trading in 1983, and for the first time as a Korean, he jumped into the maritime industry in the Northwest of the United States. Today, he has grown into a global trading company for fisheries products in Asia, the Americas and Europe as well as the production, processing and use of marine products. As a result of this achievement, he received a ’proud praise’ from PKNU in 2008. At a ceremony held at 11:00 am at PKNU on the 5th floor of the International Conference Room in College of Fisheries Science, Mr. Kim said, "Mr. Kang’s life is always a good role model for today’s young people. It is a great honor to offer our honorary doctoral degree to President Kang, who has reminded us that our young people are challenging the five great oceans and six continents." "I remember the time of my college days when I was sitting on the lawn with my friends and having a conversation while watching the blue sky connected with the blue waves of Yongho Bay," said Kang. "The days of Soul-searching were a great blessing to my life," he said. "The small and beautiful vision of this beautiful and cozy campus with a Spanish-built roof has made it a base for us to study fisheries in the United States and to be a fishery so far," he said.
