Prof. Bae Seung-cheol of PKNU, the Winner of the Cargill-KAST Bioscience Award Outstanding research achievements in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry ... Awards ceremony held on the 23rd of Feb.
Professor Bae Seung-cheol (left) of Pukyong National University and Professor Hwang Il-doo of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) were selected as the winners of the 5th Cargill-KAST Bioscience Award.
The 「Cargill-KAST Bioscience Award」 is hosted by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (President Han Min-koo) and sponsored by the Cargill Agri Purina Cultural Foundation (Chairman Park Yong-soon) of Cargill Agri Purina Inc., a global animal nutrition company.
It was established in 2015 to discover and reward excellent scientists and engineers who have contributed to the development of the field with outstanding research achievements in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry.
A plaque and prize money of 20 million won were given to each of the winners.
The award's ceremony was held on 23, February (Tue) at the Korean Academy of Science and Technology in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do. The Korean Academy of Science and Technology limited the award's ceremony attendees (15 people or less) to prevent the spread of Corona 19.
According to a presentation by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology on the 22nd, Professor Bae Seung-cheol (International Professor of FAO-World Fisheries University) of Pukyong National University is an expert in aquaculture feed nutrition among aquaculture studies. He was granted the award for contributing to sustainable aquaculture development by pioneering the field for the production of artificial seeds of eels and developing eco-friendly and high-quality blended feeds.
That day, the Korean Academy of Science and Technology stated, "Professor Bae's major research achievements include artificial hatching of eels and production of eels, development of probiotics that replace antibiotics in aquaculture feeds, and suggestion of models to reduce mercury accumulation in animals. He was also the first Asian to serve as the President of the World Aquaculture Society in 2003."
Professor Bae, who was appointed as a professor at Pukyong National University in 1993, has played a leading role in the academic development of this field by pioneering the field of aquaculture feed nutrition metabolism and feed quality management through 200 domestic and international papers and 500 academic presentations in the field of nutritional research and aquaculture for production of artificial eel seedlings.
He has contributed to the development of sustainable aquaculture through the development of eco-friend and high-quality blended feeds through the president of the World Aquaculture Society and as the expert committee member in the field of fisheries science at the National Research Foundation (NRF). For such contributions, he has received the Won Jong-Hoon Academic Award from the Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Science (KOSFAS) and the Excellence Award in the Korean Marine Fisheries Science and Technology Awards.
Meanwhile, Professor Hwang Il-Doo (Life Sciences) of POSTECH, who received the 「Cargill-KAST Bioscience Award」 along with Professor Bae, who said 'Bundle sheath control mechanism of growth through which water and photosynthesis products move', 'Mechanism of regulation of plant stem cell activity through interactions between plant hormones' was selected as the winner for the contribution of raising the status of Korean Plant Biology research by identifying these ideas for the first time in the world.
Han Min-koo, the President of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology said, "In the era of Corona 19 pandemic, while the importance of life sciences such as agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry are emerging more , excellent scientists in related fields were discovered and given awards," he added, "The global research achievements accomplished by the two winners will contribute to the establishment of a life of plenty and a healthy ecosystem for mankind."
