“첨단 융복합 학문 중심 글로벌 대학으로 도약할 것”

- 장영수 취임 2주년, 특성화 종합대학 혁신 이어 제2의 창학 나서

“창학 100년에 이르는 우리 부경대학교는 무궁무진한 잠재력을 바탕으로 끊임없이 혁신하며 명실상부 미래 첨단학문을 이끄는 특성화 종합대학으로 거듭났습니다. 이제 다가올 100년을 맞아 글로벌대학을 향한 제2의 창학을 위해 힘차게 도약하겠습니다.”

지난 2020년 11월 취임식을 가졌던 부경대학교 제7대 장영수 총장이 취임 2주년을 맞았다. 장 총장은 지난 2년간의 성과를 기반으로 남은 임기 2년, 그리고 앞으로의 대학발전을 위해 변함없는 도전과 혁신을 강조했다.

장 총장은 취임 당시 “우리 부경대학교는 위기의 시대를 헤쳐 나갈 새로운 비전을 ‘혁신 창학’으로 삼고 이를 실천하기 위한 ‘힘찬 도전’을 해내야만 한다. ‘혁신 창학’을 위해 자율과 창의가 바탕이 된 혁신을 이루겠다. 교육과 행정에서 자율을 회복하고, 창의적인 교육, 연구, 행정을 실현하겠다.”라고 강조한 바 있다.

이 같은 비전을 바탕으로 2년간 많은 혁신이 눈에 띄게 진행됐다. 대표적으로 AI, 바이오, 빅데이터 정보융합 전공 신설 등 학사조직이 대대적으로 개편됐고, 첨단산업을 중심으로 한 융복합 학문의 교육·연구체계가 갖춰졌다. 산학연 교류 협력이 대폭 확대됐고 고등교육 분야 교류 협력은 지역과 국가를 넘어 세계를 무대로 나아갔다. 급변하는 대외여건 속에서 지난 2년의 구체적인 성과와 앞으로의 도전과제를 인터뷰로 짚어본다.

▷ 코로나19·첨단산업 등 급변하는 교육 분야, 대응 성과와 향후 방향은

- 혁신수업 대폭 확대 … 학사조직 혁신 이어 반도체·이차전지 등 첨단산업 선도 나서

코로나19 확산은 사회 전체에 큰 변화의 바람을 몰고 왔다. 고등교육의 중심에 선 전국 대학들은 긴급 대처에 나섰고, 부경대도 혁신적인 선제 대응으로 ‘위기를 기회로’ 변모시켜나갔다. 장영수 총장은 “전면적인 비대면 수업도 차질 없이 지원할 수 있는 온라인 인프라를 구축해 운영한 것에 그치지 않고, 비대면 교육의 성과를 극대화할 수 있는 디지털 분야 혁신에 나선 것이 주효했다.”라고 말했다.

부경대는 수업 방식만 온라인으로 진행하는 것이 아닌, 대면·비대면 혼합 등 혁신수업을 1/3까지 대폭 확대에 나섰다. 여기에 메타버스 플랫폼까지 도입하는 등 선제적으로 대응했다. 수업뿐만 아니라 부산시 생활치료센터 운영까지 지원하는 등 지역사회와 협력하며 국립대학으로서의 책무도 놓치지 않았다.

그렇다면 코로나19 확산과 감소, 재확산이 반복되는 상황 속에 부경대는 어떻게 대응해나가고 있을까? 장 총장은 “혼란스럽고 어려운 여건을 극복하기 위해서는 우리 모두의 역량을 결집해 새로운 환경 변화에 적극적으로 대응하고, 현재를 넘어 새로운 미래를 준비하기 위해 노력해야만 한다.”라고 강조했다. 그 노력은 학사조직의 대대적인 혁신으로 가시화됐다. 장 총장은 “첨단학문을 중심으로 한 정보융합대학과 교양교육을 이끄는 학부대학을 신설한 것에 그치지 않고, 전통적인 강점의 기초학문이 더욱 부각될 수 있도록 연계·융합전공 14개, 학생설계전공 15개, 마이크로전공 21개를 신설하는 등 학생 중심의 교육과정 설계로 우리 산업과 국가의 미래를 이끌 기반을 마련했다.”라고 밝혔다.

이 같은 혁신 노력에 이어 각종 대외 평가에서 우수한 결과도 잇따랐다. 부경대는 지난해 영국 대학평가기관인 QS 주관 세계대학평가 순위에 처음으로 진입했다. 한국 대학 공동 31위에 오른 것. 평가지표 가운데 대학의 연구역량을 객관적으로 보여주는 논문 피인용 수에서 가장 높은 점수를 받았다. 이어 올해 중앙일보 대학평가에서도 기초과학 분야의 성과를 보여주는 자연과학계열 국제학술지 논문당 피인용 부문에서 16위, 과학기술교수당 산학협력 수익 부문에서 14위에 오르며 타 국립대보다 두각을 나타냈다. 특히 권역별 교외 연구비 우수대학 부문에서는 교원 1인당 교외연구비가 1억476만 원으로 경상권 대학 평균(6,406만 원)은 물론 경기·인천권 대학 평균(8,469만 원)보다 많았다. 지역사회와 연계한 연구를 적극적으로 지원한 결과다.

이 같은 혁신에 이어 부경대는 또 한 번의 도약에 나선다는 계획이다. 국가정책에 선제적으로 대응해 반도체 학과와 대학원 신설에 나서며 부산 등 동남권의 반도체 전문인력 양성을 추진하고 있다. 이를 위해 기존 반도체 분야 관련 학과와 융합전공 및 마이크로 디그리 과정, 정부재정지원사업 등 인적 물적 인프라를 적극 투입한다.

부경대는 반도체 분야에 그치지 않고 이차전지 등 에너지 분야를 비롯해 해양 모빌리티, 디지털금융 등 학과도 신설해 첨단산업 분야 인재 양성과 산업 발전에 시너지 효과를 낼 계획이다.

▷ 건물 등 시설 인프라의 눈에 띄는 변화는

- 백경호 취항, 창의관 및 수상레저관 신축 등

오랜만에 부경대학교를 방문하는 사람들은 저마다 캠퍼스를 보며 놀라곤 한다. 학교가 몰라보게 달라졌다는 것. 대학 주변은 부산 대학로의 중심으로 떠올랐고, 캠퍼스는 시시각각 새로워지고 있다. 장영수 총장은 “대학의 수많은 활동의 근간이 되는 인프라 확충의 중요성은 거듭 강조해도 지나치지 않다. 특히 학생들을 위한 교육의 질을 높일 수 있는 시설과 장비를 제공하기 위해 부경대학교는 최선을 다하고 있다.”라고 밝혔다.

수산계 최대 실습선인 ‘백경호’가 지난해 취항하며 3,997톤에 이르는 ‘바다 위의 캠퍼스’가 본격 운항에 들어갔다. 백경호는 세계 대양 구석구석을 누비면서 미래 인재를 양성하고, 21세기 해양강국을 꿈꾸는 대한민국의 성장과 번영에 중추적인 역할을 하게 된다.

도서관도 확 바뀌었다. 청운관은 리모델링 사업을 마쳐 스터디라운지, 개방형 열람실 등을 갖춘 탁 트인 학습 및 휴식 공간으로 변신했다. 중앙도서관이 있는 학술정보관도 학생복합문화공간으로 거듭나기 위한 증축공사가 한창이다. 5개 층에 걸쳐 영상미디어 등을 전시하는 복합문화전시실, 스터디룸, 오픈형 열람공간, 스터디카페, PC실 등이 들어설 예정이다. 여기에 수영장과 수상안전교육풀, 피트니스센터 등 각종 바이오헬스 시설과 스마트헬스 분야 연구를 위한 장비와 공간, 그리고 임상실험이 가능한 수상레저관이 들어섰고, 연구실, 세미나실 등 복합교육공간을 갖춘 창의관도 문을 열었다.

캠퍼스 중심에 위치한 ‘백경광장’은 부경인들을 위한 보행전용 공간으로 변신했다. 종전 숲과 보행로, 차량 통행로로 이용되던 이 공간은 보행 전용 광장이자 휴식과 소통, 지역축제를 위한 공간으로 조성됐다. 백경광장의 명칭은 학내 공모로 결정됐다. 부경대의 대표 상징물인 백경처럼 무한한 자유와 참된 진리를 추구하는 부경의 정신을 담은 공간으로서 부경인들이 백경처럼 세상을 누비기를 바라는 소망을 담고 있다고 한다.

기장캠퍼스인 수산과학연구소에도 의미 있는 시설이 들어선다. 올해 착공한 연간 500톤 규모의 대서양연어를 양식할 수 있는 ‘스마트양식 클러스터 테스트베드’가 그것. 400억 원을 투입해 부지면적 67,320㎡ 규모에 스마트양식 테스트베드와 배후부지 기반을 조성하는 사업이다. 장영수 총장은 “이 테스트베드 착공으로 GS건설과 함께 세계에서 인정하는 명품 연어를 양식하는 기반을 조성하고, 부경대학교가 중심이 되는 스마트양식 분야 전문인력 양성과 기술 발전을 이끌 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.”라고 말했다.

▷ 취임 공약사항에 대한 주요 성과는

- 연구비 2021년 597억 원 → 2022년 1,184억 원 대폭 늘어

장영수 총장은 “10대 공약사항을 중심으로 보면 우선 교수님들이 연구와 강의에 집중할 수 있는 기반을 열심히 닦았다.”라고 설명했다. 연구년 신청 자격 근속년수를 단축하고 연구년 제한 횟수도 삭제, 2년 연구년을 신설하는 등 연구년 제도를 혁신했고 업적평가 지침을 개정하는 등 업적평가체계를 고도화하고 최소화한 것이 대표적이다. 수업 자율성과 평가 자율성 확대를 위해 주당 의무 강의일수 조항을 폐지하고, 상대평가와 절대평가 재량도 부여했다. 급변하는 사회상에 대비해 비대면 강의를 위한 제도와 시설 등 인프라도 마련했다.

교육부 승인을 받아야 하는 자창비 예산 증액의 대체과제로는 연구활성화를 위한 학술연구진흥사업을 발굴해 추진하는 중이다. 국제학술회의 참가경비와 우수논문 및 단행본 포상금, 대응자금 등을 대폭 신설해 2020년 25억 6천만 원에서 2021년 37억 4천만 원으로, 2022년 42억 4천만 원으로 지원금을 크게 늘렸다. 교연지 증액 건에 대해서도 교원 복지사업 발굴도 지속해서 추진하는 중이다.

장 총장은 “학생들의 진로와 미래를 위해 체계적인 역량 강화 시스템도 구축했다. 학생역량개발과를 신설하고, 비교과통합관리스템과 경력관리시스템의 통합 운영 시스템을 구축해 각종 정보제공과 학생역량 관리를 원스톱 서비스로 제공하고 있다.”라고 강조했다. 직원들을 대상으로도 업무 역량과 효율성을 높일 수 있도록 글로벌 역량강화 연수, 외국어 교육 등과 같은 프로그램을 기획해 운영에 나섰다.

재정 확충이 단연 눈에 띈다. 재정 확충 TFT를 구성해 세부 목표와 계획을 세워 기존 재정지원사업을 확대하는 것은 물론, 신규 재원을 적극 확보하고 각종 제도를 개선한 결과 대학 전체 예산이 2019년 498억 원에서 올해 826억 원으로 껑충 뛰었다. 각종 국책사업에서 좋은 성과를 거둔 데다, 기술이전과 발전기금 등의 수익, 시설과 기자재확충 등을 위해 열심히 뛴 덕분이라는 것. 특히 연구비만 놓고 보면 2021년 597억 원에서 올해 1,184억 원의 연구 사업비를 확보하는 성과를 거둔 것으로 나타났다.

캠퍼스 공간 개선 등 인프라 확충도 곳곳에서 진행되고 있다. 단과대학 공간 집적화를 위해 인문사회·경영관 증축과 제2수산과학관(가칭), 정보융합대학 행정관(가칭), 첨단분야 실험실습동 신축을 추진하고 있고, 용당캠퍼스는 입주기업과 창업공간 확대로 명실상부 산학연 협력 특화 캠퍼스로 조성 중이다. 학생·교직원회관 건립에도 나서 현재 국회 예결위 심의 중이라고 한다.

장 총장은 “이처럼 10대 공약사항 달성을 위한 교육, 연구, 행정, 재정, 캠퍼스, 복지, 산학협력, 국제교류 부문의 73개 중점 추진과제 가운데 38개 과제를 완료했고, 35개 과제도 차질 없이 진행하고 있다.”라고 밝혔다.

▷ 앞으로 2년, 역점 사업은

- 교육·연구 지원 고도화·체계화 … 지자체·대학 간 협력 사업으로 지역 발전 선도 나서

장영수 총장은 “지금까지의 성과를 바탕으로 교육과 연구에 대한 지속적인 지원을 강화하는 것은 물론, 각종 시스템의 고도화, 체계화로 또 한 번의 도약을 위한 탄탄한 기반을 다지는 데 주력하겠다.”라고 밝혔다. 이를 위해 교수와 대학원생 등의 연구를 집중 지원한다. 신임교원을 대상으로 연구과제 수주를 위한 노하우를 전수하고, 찾아가는 연구지원 서비스도 실시한다. 국제학술지에 개재한 논문은 편수 제한 없이 실비를 지원하고, 영문서비스 지원사업도 확대 시행한다. 대학원 우수 학생 유치와 지원을 위해 학부와 대학원의 학·석사연계과정 이수자 및 진학자 대상 장학금도 확대된다.

차기 대학평가도 관건이다. 지난해 대학기본역량진단을 통과한 데 이어, 오는 12월 발표 예정인 차기 대학평가에 선제 대응에 나선다. 앞선 평가에 대한 분석은 물론, 정책 동향과 타 대학 우수사례 등을 분석해 항목별로 사전 준비하고, 구체적인 평가계획이 발표되면 설명회 개최, 내외부 컨설팅을 여는 등 빈틈없이 대비해 나갈 계획이다.

지역 발전의 큰 기둥인 지역대학으로서 대학 발전은 물론, 지역사회와 상생으로 지역 발전을 선도하기 위해 지자체와 권역 대학 간 협력도 확대한다. 부산지역 국립대학 혁신네트워크 등 협의체를 통한 지속적인 교류는 물론, 부경대가 지닌 첨단학문 분야의 강점을 기반으로 디지털혁신공유대학, 지역선도대학육성사업, 자원특화대학, 반도체전공트랙사업 등을 통해 대학 발전과 지역 발전에 힘쓴다. 또 용당캠퍼스에 국책연구소, 글로벌 기업 등을 유치해 명실상부 지역 대표 산학연 협력 특화 캠퍼스로서의 위상을 정립할 계획이다.

지역을 넘어 세계로 뻗어나가는 글로벌 대학으로서의 위상도 강화한다. 최근 인도네시아 국회의장에게 명예박사학위를 수여하고, 인도네시아 8개 대학과 한꺼번에 학술교류협정을 체결한 장영수 총장은 “한국과 인도네시아 간 교류와 협력을 한 차원 격상시키는 것은 물론, 동남아시아 지역의 고등교육 발전과 글로벌 리더 양성 중심 대학으로 활약하는 계기가 될 것.”이라고 밝혔다. 올해 10월 기준 외국인 유학생은 1,768명으로 역대 최대를 기록했고, 앞으로도 정부초청장학생 등 우수유학생 유치를 위한 지원 활동을 활발히 펼칠 예정이다.

▷ 교육부 장관 임명, 부경대의 대응 방향은

- 미래 변화 이끌 디지털 혁신 인재 양성 … 구성원 소통 강화

급격한 인구변화, 산업 변화와 같은 사회변동 속에서 교육의 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 이주호 교육부 장관도 취임사를 통해 ‘교육개혁’에 대해 역설한 바 있다. 장영수 총장은 “현대 디지털 대전환의 시기에 발맞추는 것이 아닌, 교육으로 변화와 혁신을 이끌겠다.”라고 밝혔다. 이를 위해 첨단 과학기술을 선점하기 위한 세계의 경쟁 속에서 활약할 디지털 혁신 인재 양성에 나선다. 첨단 과학기술을 선점하기 위한 국가 간의 패권 경쟁이 고조되는 가운데 반도체 디지털 등 국가 전략산업의 인재를 양성하기 위한 교육과정을 체계적으로 운영해나가고 관련 연구개발도 확대, 지원해나간다는 계획이다. 특히 부경대의 전통적인 기초학문과 특성화 분야 학문의 융복합을 통한 시너지 효과가 극대화될 것으로 기대된다.

“Pukyong National University, which has been around 100 years since its founding, has been reborn as a specialized comprehensive university that leads the high-tech academics by constantly innovating based on its infinite potential. Celebrating the next 100 years, we will make a powerful leap forward for the second founding of a global university.”

Pukyong National University's 7th President Jang Young-Soo, who had an inauguration ceremony in November 2020, has reached the second anniversary of his inauguration. Based on the achievements of the past two years, President Jang emphasized unwavering challenge and innovation for the remaining two years of his term of office and for the future development of the university.

President Jang stressed in his inauguration address, “We, Pukyong National University, need to take ‘new beginning’ as our new vision to overcome the era of crisis, and must take on a ‘strong challenges’ to put it into practice. I will achieve innovation based on liberty and creativity for ‘innovative starting’. I will set goals to restore liberty in education and administration and realize creative education, research, and administration.”

Based on this vision, Pukyong National University has undergone many remarkable innovations over the past two years. Representatively, the undergraduate organization has been extensively reorganized, such as the establishment of AI, bio, and big data convergence majors, and an education and research system for convergence studies centered on high-tech industries has been established. Our university's industry-university-institute exchanges and cooperation have expanded significantly, and exchanges and cooperation in the field of higher education have gone beyond regional and national boundaries to the world stage. During rapidly changing external conditions, we will look through specific achievements over the past two years and future challenges through interviews.

▷ What are the achievements and future directions of our university in responding to rapidly changing educational fields such as COVID-19 and high-tech industries?

- Innovative classes will be greatly expanded … leading the high-tech industries such as semiconductors and secondary batteries following structure renovation of the academic affairs

Universities across the country, which are at the forefront of higher education, responded promptly to the situation, and Pukyong National University also turned ‘crisis into opportunity’ with innovative and anticipative moves. President Jang Young-Soo said, “I believe that it was effective not only to build an online infrastructure that can support full-scale online classes, but also to innovate in the digital field to maximize the results of online education.”

Pukyong National University decided to drastically expand innovative classes, such as a mixture of in-person and virtual classes, to one-third, rather than only offering classes online. In addition, it preemptively responded by introducing the metaverse platform. The university fulfilled its responsibility as a national university by cooperating with the local community by supporting not only classes but also the operation of the treatment centers in Busan.

Then, how is Pukyong National University currently responding to a situation where the cycle of spread, decrease, and resurgence of COVID-19 repeating? President Jang stressed, “To overcome the chaotic and difficult conditions, all of us must gather our capabilities to actively respond to new environmental changes and make a concerted effort to prepare for a new future beyond the present.” The effort was visualized as a major innovation in the academic organization. He added, “In addition to the newly established college of information technology centered on high-tech convergence studies and undergraduate college leading liberal arts education, and our university's traditional strengths in basic studies can become a greater advantage, 14 interdisciplinary majors and convergence majors, and 15 student-designed majors, 21 new micro majors were established to lay the groundwork to lead the future of our industry and nation through student-centered curriculum design.”

Following these innovative efforts, excellent results followed in various external evaluations. Last year, Pukyong National University recorded the first entry into the world university rankings hosted by QS, a British university evaluation agency. Ranked tied for 31st among Korean universities. Among the evaluation indicators, papers that objectively show the university's research capabilities received the highest score in terms of the number of citations. Following this, in the university evaluation hosted by the Joong-Ang Ilbo this year, it ranked 16th in the number of citations per paper in natural sciences international journals, which shows performance in the field of basic science, and 14th in the category of profit through industry-university cooperation per professor of science and technology. Pukyong National University’s research expenditure per faculty member was 147.6 million won in the category of outstanding universities receiving off-campus research funding locally, which was higher than the average of universities in the Gyeongsang provinces (64.06 million won) as well as the average of universities in the Gyeonggi-Incheon (84.69 million won). This is the result of active support for research in connection with the local community.

By pushing such innovation, Pukyong National University plans to take another leap forward. Currently, it is promoting the establishment of semiconductor-related departments and graduate schools in a preemptive response to national policies, and fostering semiconductor experts in the southeast area, including Busan.

▷ What are the noticeable changes in facility infrastructure such as buildings?

- Launching of new training ship Baek-Kyung, construction of Changeui building and marine leisure center, etc.

People who visit Pukyong National University after a long time are surprised to see the campus. The reason is that the school has changed beyond recognition. The campus area has emerged as the center of the university district, and the campus is being renewed from moment to moment. President Jang Young-Soo said, “It is never too much to stress the importance of expanding infrastructure, which is the basis of numerous activities of universities. Especially, Pukyong National University is doing its best to provide facilities and equipment if it can improve the quality of education for students.”

‘Baek-Kyung’, the largest training ship in the fisheries industry, went into service last year, and the ‘campus on the sea’ weighing 3,997 tons began full-scale operation. Baek-Kyung will play a pivotal role in the growth and prosperity of Korea, which dreams of becoming a maritime power in the 21st century, nurturing future experts while traveling to every corner of the world's oceans.

The library has also changed dramatically. Through the remodeling, the Cheongun center has been transformed into an open study and rest space with a study lounge and an open reading room. The academic information center, where the library is located, is also under construction to transform it into a complex cultural space for students. The 5th floor will be divided into a complex cultural exhibition hall displaying video media, study rooms, open reading space, study caf？, and internet caf？. Here, various bio-health facilities such as a swimming pool, water safety education pool, fitness center, equipment, and space for research in the smart health field, and a marine leisure center where clinical trials can be conducted have been built. In addition, there is newly opened Changeui building, which has a complex educational space such as a research room and a seminar room.

‘Baekyong street’, located in the center of the campus, has been turned into a pedestrian-only space for members of Puyong National University. In the past, this space, which was used as a forest, pedestrian path, and vehicle passage, was created as a pedestrian only street and a space for rest, communication, and local festivals. The name of Baekyong street was decided through a contest in campus. Like as Baekyong, the representative symbol of Pukyong National University, it is a space containing the spirit of Pukyong that pursues infinite freedom and truth, and it is said to contain the hope that students will travel around the world.

A significant facility will also be at the institute of fisheries sciences on the Gijang campus. It is the ‘smart firming cluster test bed’ that can farm 500 tons of Atlantic salmon annually, which began construction this year.

▷ What are the major fulfillment of the inaugural pledges?

- Research expenses greatly increased from 59.7 billion won in 2021 to 118.4 billion won in 2022

President Jang Young-Soo explained, “If you focus on the 10 pledges that I mentioned, you will find that the foundation has been laid so that professors can focus on research and teaching.” A representative achievement is the advancement and minimization of the achievement evaluation system, such as shortening the number of years for service required to apply for a research year, removing the limit on the number of years of research, establishing a new two-year research year, and revising the achievement evaluation guidelines. To expand lecture autonomy and students' autonomy in lecture evaluation, the provision on the mandatory number of lecture days per week was abolished, and relative and absolute evaluation discretion was also granted. In preparation for the rapidly changing society, infrastructure such as systems and facilities for online lectures was also prepared.

As an alternative task for the budget increase, which must be approved by the ministry of education, an academic research promotion project is being discovered to promote research. The subsidy was greatly increased from 2.56 billion won in 2020 to 3.74 billion won in 2021 and 4.24 billion won in 2022 by significantly newly establishing expenses for participation in international academic conferences, rewards for publishing papers and books, and support funds. Regarding the case of increasing educational research and student guidance expenses, it is also continuing to promote welfare programs for teachers.

President Jang stressed, “We have also established a systematic capacity building system for students' career and future. The expansion of finances stands out among them. President Jang Young-Soo said, “Based on the achievements so far, we will not only strengthen continuous support for education and research, but also do our best to lay a solid foundation for another leap forward by upgrading and systematizing various systems.” The school intensively supports the research of professors and graduate students. It transfers know-how for new faculty members to win research projects and provides on-the-go research support services. Papers published in international journals will be subsidized without limit on the number of editions, and the English translation service support project will be expanded. To attract and support excellent graduate students, scholarships for those who have completed the undergraduate and master's combined undergraduate and graduate programs and those who have advanced to graduate school will be also expanded.

The next university assessment is also a key factor. After passing the evaluation index of Korean university last year, Pukyong National University is preparing preemptive measures for the next university assessment scheduled to be announced in December. The university plans to prepare in advance by item by analyzing policy trends and best practices of other universities as well as analysis of previous assessment. Based on Pukyong National University's strengths in advanced academic fields, as well as continuous exchanges through consultative bodies such as innovation networks among national universities in Busan, through digital innovation sharing universities, regional leading university projects, resource-specialized universities, and semiconductor major track projects, Pukyong National University will strive for both university and regional development. In addition, it plans to attract national research institutes and global companies to the Yongdang campus to establish its status as a specialized campus for industry-academia-institute cooperation.

The university will also strengthen its global positioning that extends beyond the region to the world. President Jang Young-Soo, who recently conferred an honorary doctorate on the speaker of the Indonesian national assembly and signed academic exchange agreements with eight Indonesian universities at once, said, “This will not only elevate exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Indonesia to the next level, but also serve as an opportunity for Pukyong National University to become active as a university centered on developing higher education in Southeast Asia and fostering global leaders.” As of October, this year, the number of foreign students reached a record high of 1,768, and the university plans to actively carry out support activities to attract outstanding international students, such as government scholarship students.

As hegemonic race among countries to preoccupy high-tech science and technology is heating up, his idea is to systematically operate educational courses to cultivate talents in national strategic industries such as semiconductors and digital, and to expand and support related research. Through this, it is expected that the synergy effect will be maximized through the convergence of Pukyong National University's traditional basic studies and specialized studies.
