As the head of the Korea-USA research group, Professor Ock Gon will be playing an important role in the investigation of defoliant. A professor of the Department of Environmental Atmospheric Sciences, Ock Gon, who is also the head of the Dioxin Research Center, is playing a major role in investigating defoliant in the USA base which is located in Waegwan in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Professor Ock Gon is the head of the Korea-USA research group. Professor Ock Gon was selected as the head of the Korea-USA research group with Birchmeier, a colonel of the US Army headquarters in Korea. This selection took place during the second meeting on the discussion about the personnel organization of the research group to solve environmental problems in relation to the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) . This meeting was held in the USA base in Yongsan, Seoul. As a result of this second meeting, Professor Gon began the investigations with research group members who are comprised of 16 Koreans and 10 Americans after June 2nd. This research group was formed to investigate whether defoliant was reclaimed or not. This investigation was conducted on May 13th because one of the retired American soldiers stationed in Korea testified on an American broadcast that they had buried defoliant in the USA base which is located in Waegwan-eup, Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do in 1978. Professor Ock Gon stated the following, “It is really important for us to provide the exact information and to understand the present situation to guarantee much safer life environment for the residents. In addition, we will strive to investigate the incident thoroughly, leaving no doubt whatsoever. Also, we have to cooperate with other countries to solve the problems related to the damage of the harmful chemical substances produced by defoliant.” Moreover, he added, “This scientific approach conducted by the research group will be able to help our country to prepare firm countermeasures in special and accidental situations such as these.” The Korean-USA research group will use additional equipment including Ground Probing Rader (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity (ER) to confirm whether defoliant exists or not, to secure safety and to investigate scientifically. Also, they are going to research all of the related problems by carrying out a detailed analysis. <Pukyong Today> |
