We just did our best because we are young, but we never expected to get the grand prize."
- Students from PKNU got the grand prize in 'Rebuilding campaign' ... Won-ik Kim, Hyun-man Jung, Chae-rim Ok, Su-jun Ahn.

PKNU students got the first prize in the 'Rebuilding Campaign' which is a business for supporting small business owners.

The 'Rebuilding Campaign' is a competition run by Busan City Hall and the Korea Small Store Management Assistance Association (President Yu-Tae Lee). This competition is for supporting improvement to small business owners, and also for offering the experience of management to university students. Overall, 35 university student teams in Busan competed for this campaign prize.

The members of the PKNU team who received the Busan Mayor First Prize are Won-ik Kim (4th grade, Department of Systems Management & Engineering), Hyun-man Jung (4th grade Economics), Chae-rim Ok (3th grade, Department of Applied Mathematics), and Su-jin Ahn (4th grade, Department of Systems Management & Engineering).

They provided management consulting for 'Red Fork', a small pasta restaurant close to Pukyong National University for 100 days from May, and they raised sales to almost double.

How did they make changes for the restaurant which was suffering from financial problems and how did they work together even though they all have different majors in university?

Even though they have different majors, they all study Economics as a double major, and they are preparing to get jobs in banking by attending the same study group together. They used their knowledge efficiently from what they had studied. They started by analyzing the problem, then they intensively focused on accounting (which the owner hadn't cared about much), such as cost accounting for reducing costs and break-even points.

The most important thing is that it was 'hands-on'. When they visited the 'Red Fork' the owner hesitated because he thought that they were salespeople. However, he began to trust them when he could see that they were surveying customers, and they made around 1000 coupons with their own hands and distributed them to people. After distributing coupons, the sales have gone through the roof since the restaurant opened.

In addition, through the results of the survey, they ascertained that the pasta was not very filling, so they invented some lunch sets which include a slice of bread, and they also made a take-out banner for promotion. They rented drinks from the beverage company, chairs and a sound system from a nearby cellphone-selling store for free as a promotion event. They also cast their friend's band for the event as well.

Won-ik Kim said that up until now, he had just been focusing on his career but he wanted to experience the real economic circumstances of management, and he thought that this chance was going to be a big step towards becoming a good banker.

"There was always a chance to go if I believe in myself and my youth. Through this chance, I realized that whatever seems impossible and hard, if I'm not afraid of it, and if I don't hesitate to face it, I can get anything I want," Su-jin Ahn said.<Pukyong today>
