"I delivered 2000 books as a present to Nepalese kids" Jung Won-tae (26, Division of Architecture), Kim Ji-hong (28, Division of Architecture), and Lee Ju-yeon (24, Korean Language and Literature Department), recently came back from Nepal after delivering 2000 English books to Nepalese students, They departed from Korea on the 23rd of December last year, and delivered almost 2000 books for 19 days to 3 schools: Mangala School in Lamjung, Vinayak School in Kalimati, and Nichuta School in Nichuta. 'From To' is a volunteer team made up of 10 Pukyong students. After Lim Hyunseok (27, Division of International Commerce) travelled to Nepal last January and experienced the awful environment of Nepalese students, he called people together to help them. Jung Won-tae who came back from Nepal said, “Nepalese students who are studying in poor areas have to stop studying at 3pm in the afternoon because there is no electricity, and they can't even get textbooks for classes”. The 'From to' people had conducted many donation events such as a flea market, a daily cafe, and an in-school donation event. If Korean books were donated, the books were exchanged for English books in the Bosu-dong book store street, and if coins or gift cards were donated, they were used to buy English books. English books were also donated by the Busan International Foreign School as requested. In total they received around 2000 books. The 'From To' students paid to send all of the books to Nepal themselves. They made money from school scholarships or part time jobs to go to Nepal. Oh Geun-suk who is teaching a class in the Division of Architecture donated some money as well. Lim Hyunseok who was supposed to go to Nepal with the team gave up his chance to travel there and instead donated his travel money to assist with the distribution costs for sending books. "I still can't forget Nepalese students' bright eyes. We will start to conduct other volunteer jobs to improve their educational environment not just book donation, but also building a library and creating education programs," Jung Won-tae said.<Pukyong today> |
