Living in Korea - The story about my lovely husband
- Nguyen Thi Thuy (Vietnamese student in the Korean Language and Literature Department in PKNU)

In Vietnam, Korean TV drama is famous. Whenever I watch Korean dramas, I feel like my life is pretty similar to them, especially in regards to finding happiness after much meandering.

I’m currently a student of the Korean Language and Literature Department. I not only have classes at the university, but I also take additional Korean classes every afternoon, so after finishing all the classes, it is almost 10 o’clock. At first, it was quite a tough job. It was too hard to take care of my studies and my baby at the same time. It gets harder when it’s cold. The colder Korean weather compared with Vietnam used to make my skin rough. However, after finishing all the classes, my husband massages my legs with hot water and makes me feel relaxed, and he even puts some cream on my rough skin.

A few years ago, I came to Korea to marry a guy through an international marriage bureau. When I first saw my husband, I thought he looked a bit scary. As soon as my husband realised that I was scared of him, he tried his best to make me laugh and now I can’t help laughing in front of him. So, I decided to marry him.

He showed me all of the famous tourist attractions in Busan. He takes me out to eat Korean food, and sometimes he lets me have my hometown food. He also cares about my family in my country, maybe more than I do.

However, not everything was going well. In the third year after we married, my husband’s sight was getting worse. At first, objects looked blurry but then as it got worse, he had 3 car accidents. When he started not to see clearly and he couldn’t work anymore, he started to get angry for no reason. My husband had been depressed for half a year, but I persuaded him that life is not over yet and made him learn about massage. The massage course takes 1 year to finish, but he did his best for his family. After finishing the final exam in the course, he said he was not confident about the result, but he got the notice of success for the exam in the end. When we got the notice, we hugged each other and cried together for quite a long time. As he works and takes care of me well, our relationship has improved.

With a visually impaired husband and very little money, it was almost impossible for me to go to university, but my husband wanted me to go to university desperately. Maybe he thinks that if he passed away early because of his handicapped eyesight, I need to be able to take care of my family. My parents were happy to hear that I could go to university because they couldn’t afford to let me go to university in Vietnam. Thanks to my husband’s support, I can attend Pukyong National University. Because of low school fee and nice professors, I always feel light when I come to university.

We were even on the TV. The story of me and my husband had been introduced to a broadcasting station through my volunteer center. Sometimes people recognized me after we’d been on TV, like when I was studying in university and I was spending time with my husband. Many good things come to me when I’m with my husband.

People are curious that we are using honorific to each other. In some international relationships, husbands talk down to their wives or treat them roughly, but my husband respects me by using honorific all the time. A man like this is the most important thing in my life. "My lovely husband”. I’m always happy that I can be with you. I love you and thank you."
