"The short- and long-term strategy for developing marine resources of the Arctic Ocean is needed"
- PKNU and Korea Maritime Institute held the international scholarship symposium about development of Artic Ocean's marine resources and coastal area utilization.

Pukyong National University(president Kim Young-Seup) and Korea Maritime Institute (president Kim Sung-Gwi) held the international scholarship symposium about "development of Artic Ocean's future marine resources and coastal area utilization" in conference room of administration building at two in the afternoon November 19.

In this symposium, Moon Hae-Nam, the maritime policy director of Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, noticed that they will enhance international cooperation for Artic Ocean through activity of Artic council and activation of private cooperation in his keynote talk "Korean maritime-fisheries policy for Artic Ocean". The Korean government will push ahead scientific research such as climate change research, building spatial data about Artic Ocean and its region, discovering business in Artic area through assart for new Artic sea road and cooperation with ocean port management, and expansion of base of system including amendment of relevant statutory provisions about the polar region policy and construction for building information center for polar region.

"Climate change can cause the changes of the amount of ocean resources and species, but even though thawing of Artic area is going on, it doesn't meant that maritime resource increases. As maritime resources are affected various mechanical reasons, approach to developing maritime resources should be done carefully considering characteristic of marine ecosystem," Cruise, the professor of University of Alaska Anchorage, said in his keynote speech 'Climate change's potential effect toward fishery in north eastern pacific ocean and Bering sea'.

Neals, the professor of University of Southern Denmark, emphasized efforts for creating potential economic values of the new Arctic sea road as glaciers melting down in his speech 'climate change in Artic fisheries and its social and economic effect' because the road has a great development feasibility of marine resources and distribution industry as it is the shortest way from Far East Asia to Europe and Atlantic coast.

Um Sun-Hee, the special researcher of Korean Maritime Institute, said through her speech 'management structure of Artic fisheries' that Korea should set up short- and long-term approach strategy and find various way to enhance cooperation with other countries and tie with local residents.
The professor of department of spatial information engineering, Hong-Joo Yoon, noticed through his keynote speech 'the new age of polar science' that seas around the Artic ocean are potentially important places as it is the main spawning ground of marine mammal, birds, and fishes, so further research about the place is needed.<Pukyong today>
