A graduate donated a fortune to Pukyong National University, alma mater, in gratitude to his late Professor Yang Bo-suk

Story of a student who donated a fortune to his alma mater in the name of his teacher is touching the people’s heart.

Lee So-hwan (47), the CEO of SHINHO E&T in Nam-gu, Ulsan Metropolitan City, donated 60 million won to Pukyong National University on 30 November to honor the late professor Yang Bo-suk (Department of Mechanical Automotive Engineering of PKNU,) who passed away at the age of 55 in April of 2012 after an illness.

He asked the University to give the money to juniors over 5 years, 6 million won every semester, as the name of Yang Bosuk Scholarship.

“I decided the donation hoping that his name will not be forgotten easily,” the student who graduated both of his bachelor’s and master’s degree under the tutelage of the professor said.

Professor Yang, who was appointed to Pukyong National University in 1985, was a world-class scientist who pioneered in machine vibration, an unfamiliar field of learning to Korean students. His world-renowned papers on assessment and forecast of machine condition continue to be cited worldwide for the reason that huge losses from mechanical fault can be reduced.

He was recognized enough to win Knowledge Creation Awards last year even after his death, which is the prize awarded to top 10 scientists of the year by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning,.

“His vibration engineering was the most demanding subject. Contents of the lecture changed every year, the class was strict, and the exams were a nightmare. But the professor loved his students like his family. Even his wife and children dined together with us sometimes,” Lee recalled.

“Students who started their bachelor’s and master’s course at his Intelligence Dynamics Laboratory only paid the first quarter of tuition fee. The professor paid the rest. He only left a small apartment and an old car behind. He was such a man of the enlightenment who strove only for his research and students.”

After the graduation, Lee started a company in relation to what he had been taught from his mentor. He founded SHINHO E&T in 2004, and grew his business to a small but strong leading company in machine vibration analysis in Korea.

He said, “We, his students, have established ourselves as an expert thanks to him. Now we are not going to grieve for him anymore but to celebrate and respect his passion and love.” <Pukyong Today>
