PKNU Professor Named among the World’s Greatest Scientists
According to PKNU, Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for business and professionals, released the name of 3,126 scientists who tallied a sufficiently high citation rate to rank among the top 1% most cited in their respective fields, based on an analysis of over 120,000 academic papers indexed in the Web of Science during 2003-2013. A total of 19 Korean scientists were named and Professor Kim was recognized for the impact of his research in agriculture including marine and fisheries, demonstrating the value of his research. Professor Kim who majored in marine biochemistry has written 600 papers till now, and 400 of them are indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI). His result is remarkable considering the fact that an average scientist barely makes 100 of his research articles to be included in the SCI all his life. Through these research efforts, he holds 130 patents and wrote 57 professional publications in marine and fisheries. He was also ranked in the Thomson Reuters’ 2014 edition of Highly Cited Researchers list for the past ten years that includes 16 Korean researchers who are worthy of a Nobel Prize. He is a home-grown talent who earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in food science & technology at Pukyong National University after graduating with the same bachelor’s degree. Then he completed the postdoctoral program at the Bioprocess Lab, University of Illinois. Since he became a professor at the Department of Chemistry of his alma mater in 1982, he has been playing a pivotal role in transforming the country into a mecca of the research on marine bio and functional foods. He served as the first president of the Korean Society for Chitin and Chitosan, the president of the Korean Society for Marine Technology, and the chief of the Marine Bioprocess Research Center. He was credited with the academic development for the field, and last September became the only professor from the rural university all across Korea who won the 60th National Academy of Sciences Award and from universities in Busan, Gyeongnam and Ulsan region who received 2014 Knowledge Creation Awards from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, which is awarded to the top 10 Korean scientists. Since 2006, he is the director of the International Marine Biotechnology Association (IMBA) as well as the editor of Marine Biotechnology, an international scientific journal of the IMBA. <Pukyong Today> |
