From this semester, Pukyong National University offers a new scholarship named The Jeonghyotaek Scholarship, which provides a total of ₩1 billion in scholarship money during the next forty years, to students who bring a superior “self-development plan.”

By examining the juniors and seniors’ submitted ‘self-development plan,’ which contained their dream, goal and action plan, top five students were selected. They will be awarded a total of ₩12,500,000, each of them up to ₩3.5 million, for this semester. Four hundred students will receive a total of KRW 1 billion in scholarship awards over the next 40 years.

The Jeonghyotaek Scholarship was established by PKNU alumnus Jeong Hyo-taek (82), president of the Hung-A Inc., in October last year. He donated 1 billion won to his alma mater to support his juniors.

He is a self-made man who started his career as an employee in 1959 and finally became the CEO of the world-class tire company Hung-A in 1995. He said, “When it came to time to look back at my life, I decided the donation to my alma mater where I spent my early years. I hope this will help the youth to have a dream and encourage themselves even if they are in hard times right now.”

Among the first candidates who submitted the plan last May, PKNU chose five students and presented with a scholarship certificate on 14 June: Kim Si-jae (22), senior of the Department of Public Administration; Kim Won-seop (25), junior of the Department of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineering; Kim Cheol-hwan (23), junior of the Department of Food Science & Technology; Park Jin-wu (23), junior of the Department of Control and Instrumentation Engineering; Ok Hyeon-seung (25), senior of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Park Jun-wu was selected for his plan “to start a robot company or to become a researcher of the institute to create disaster relief robot,” and Ok Hyeon-seung submitted a plan “to become a government official in charge of environment who can deal with air and water contamination of the country.” Kim Cheol-hwan was ambitious enough “to hope to make a philanthropic donation when he becomes the CEO of a food company.”

They can earn the scholarship money every semester for the rest of the university if they hand in a progress report of the self-development plan next semester. <Pukyong Today>
