On September 8, PKNU’s project team for the CORE held the 1st Marine Humanities Seminar: What is CORE, in the presence of 200 student and citizen audiences, to introduce programs and benefits of the project that just got started.

The CORE, the College of Humanities' Research and Education, is government-funded project. PKNU was chosen for the project last March, by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, as one of the 16 selected universities, and will be receiving a total of KRW 7.8 billion over three years.

PKNU’s project aims to preserve and promote “marine humanities” and cultivate its professionals by providing multidisciplinary education. The CORE team is headed by four departments and a divisionDepartment of Korean Language and Literature, Department of English Language and Literature, Department of Japanese Language and Literature, Department of History, Division of International and Area Studies, and every PKNU student is qualified to participate in the program through many ways, for example interdisciplinary study.

They can be involved in specialized humanities programs divided into three areas: global area studies, humanities-based multidisciplinary research, and intensive course in foundation studies.

For the global area studies, PKNU organized four new departments of Chinese studies, Japanese studies, International studies, and International Development and Cooperation Studies. Students can learn the language, culture and politics of the Pacific-rim area. The department of American studies is also created next year.
The multidisciplinary research programs on Marine-based Visual Cultural Contents, Foreign Language for Marine Business Communication, and Marine & Fisheries Records Management are provided in relation to the Busan’s industry infrastructure. Graduate school and research institute for the intensive foundation studies in the field of marine humanities are also waiting to increase their members.

The project team provides scholarship to the graduates with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and also supports international exchange programs such as foreign language study, global field study and international symposium. <Pukyong Today>
