Students at Pukyong National University found a novel idea of predicting the amount of fish under the sea and won the grand prize at the ’The 7th Contest of Ocean and Fisheries Information Service & Business Idea’ hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The winner is team See-Sea which is composed of students Lee Ga-hyeon (22), Park Je-hyeon (22), Kim Min-gyu (22), 3rd year of the Department of Marine and Fisheries Management of Pukyong National University. The winning work is ’Easy predictive management system for Fisheries Resource with Sonar Sea Map’.

The idea is based on a fact that an average of 15,000 offshore fishing vessels per day do not store the information after the fish finder (SONAR) detects fish under the sea.

This means, ▷ After supplying a fish finder with a fish finder information transceiver to the fishing vessels, ▷collecting the information of fisheries by water area and analyzing the maritime information of the area ▷in combination with fishery information, ▷it is easy to know which fish species appear and how much depending on the water temperature, wind speed, and wave height.

This idea was evaluated as being able to dramatically improve the cost and accuracy of measuring fishery resources.

Student Lee Ga-hyeon said, "Every year, the TAC, which is the total allowable catch that fishermen can catch, is calculated, and it has been pointed out that the accuracy is poor because it mainly relies on fishermen’s report on the catch. We hope that this method discovered with my friends will be of little help to the management of fisheries resources and the continued fishing of fishermen."

Pukyong National University students won three of the ten winning teams in this competition. In addition to the team See-Sea, which is the grand prize of 5 million won, two teams received excellence awards. Among them, the team ’Row fish Boss’ received an award for the idea of ’Seacretary’, which provides comprehensive information on aquatic products such as fish species, habitat environment and nutritional information by analyzing photo information using artificial intelligence after taking and transmitting photos of fishery products. Team ’Fish vet’ provides integrated farming information such as optimal feed supply, disease management, shipping date, and management analysis to farm managers by linking analysis of the location, species, fishery environment and water temperature of the farm. They each received excellence awards for the idea.

The 10 ideas that are the winners of this contest are recommended for start-up support programs of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and 39 affiliated organizations, and they are used in the establishment of related policies. <Pukyong Today>
