A novelist Ha Dong-hyeon (59 yrs old, Jin-gu, Busan) won the Grand Prize for the Award of Korean Seafaring Literature.

The award, which was hosted by the Busan literary Association (Chairman Choi Young-goo), is regarded as one of the representative marine literature awards in Korea, which is awarded at the 24th this year.

Pukyong National University's Department of Fisheries (Division of Marine Production System Management), award-winning work of alumnus Mr. Ha (class of 80's) is 'The Sea of Savage'. This work is a 1,000-page long novel written by Mr. Ha, a former captain of a ship, based on his vivid deep-sea fishing experience.

Regarding Mr. Ha's award-winning work, the judges evaluated, "A work that depicts the reality of marine life, such as the danger and satisfaction of fishing, the conspiracy of a deep-sea fishing company, and the fall of the deep-sea industry, targeting the life of a legendary deep-sea fishing captain."

Mr. Ha said through his awards speech, "This work was intended to portray the daily life and labor of a deep-sea fishing boat on a large scale. I am grateful to Kang Nam-joo, who always encourages me, the judges, the Busan Literature Association, and my family who always supports even the breadwinner who buries oneself to novels that does not make money.

He continued, "In the campus of Pukyong National University, there is a Baekyong Tower to commemorate the souls of seniors who devoted their precious lives to the sea while pioneering deep-sea fishing. I dedicate this glorious prize to the souls sleeping below memorial tower."

Having entered the Busan Ilbo's Award of Korean Seafaring Literature in 2016, he has recently swept various domestic literary awards and has been widely promoting his writing skills.

Mr. Ha won the Awards of Yeosu Marine Literature and Awards of Geumsaem Literature in novels in 2019. In 2018, he also won two literary awards, including the Literature Award of Pyeongsary which is a Land Literature Festival and the Awards of Lighthouse Literature.

Meanwhile, it is said that a total of 3,837 entries for the Award of Korean Seafaring Literature this year have been entered. The deliberation of the original review was conducted by the Sijo (traditional three-verse Korean poem) Lim Jong-chan (chair of the judging committee), Professor Kim Gyeong-bok of Kyungnam University, poet Park Mi-jeong, and essayist Kim Jeong-hwa.
