'Our benevolent big sister' The story of a big donation by PKNU alumna, Seo Young-ok Ms. Seo, enrolled in 1975 at department of Chemical Engineering, served as the 10th President of Alumni Association in 2015. As the first female alumni president of Pukyong National University, she embraced and developed alumni society with her broad mind and sociability. According to the article that day, she has recently donated 50 million won to build an Independence Park in Yangsan, Gyeongnam. In April 2016, she donated 100 million won to her alma mater, Pukyong National University, and at that time, she said about the donation in an interview. "The donation is not about showing off. It is about the certain responsibilities that I owe to society myself." If she has more than three pairs of socks, she is open-handed enough to present a spare around her. How did her donation first begin? According to her interview article that day, "Sharing began by donating 2,000 won received after delivering newspapers to the nursery school when I was a middle school student." Since then, she said that whenever she had 5,000 won, 10,000 won, and 100,000 won in her pocket, she shared with neighbors in need. The article introduced her plain living, "still buying clothes in the village market and using outdated home appliances.", and added "In fact, the company did not have a separate presidential office. Her desk was just lying on the side of the office where the employees were using it."
Since graduating from middle school, she has been working in the field of engineering. From Pusan Technical High School (5-year program), Department of Chemical Engineering at Pusan National University of Technology, and Graduate School of Dong-A University (Chemical Engineering) to master's and doctoral degrees, she has been proudly recognized as a ‘female engineer’ in the engineering field where most of them were men. In an interview at the time of the inauguration of the Alumni Chairman, she emphasized, "It would be nice if young people know the value of SMEs, and I think they should pay attention to SMEs." She advised, "The mandatory retirement set in large corporations is getting earlier, but in the small and medium-sized enterprises, people can work beyond the age limit with flexible retirement. SMEs do not abandon those who work hard unless workers leave." What is the guidelines in her life? In an interview at the time, she said that magnet in her life is 'Diligence (勤)' and 'Filial devotion (孝)'. She said, "Diligence (勤) is the treasure of a lifetime, and Filial devotion(孝) is the basic of a hundred things." The time to look inside often due to COVID-19, her words set off a silent ripple in my mind. <Pukyong Today> |
