'Public Attention' to Bae Ki-il, the CEO of Sehwa Seafood, who won the $10 Million Export Tower
Aiming for the global market with 'seaweed snacks'

Bae Ki-il, an alumnus of Pukyong National University (age 75, entered Fisheries Management Department in 1964), is drawing attention for his outstanding achievements in the fishery industry.

Sehwa Seafood, which is a seafood processing company in Busan, chaired by Mr. Bae, was awarded the '10-Million-Dollar Export Monument Award ($10 Million Export Tower)' on the 57th Trade Day.

The 'Trade Day' (5th, Dec.) award is hosted by the Korea International Trade Association sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, and annually selects and rewards companies that have contributed to developing overseas markets and increasing exports.

Sehwa Seafood attracted attention with such achievements two years after receiving the 5 million dollar export tower in 2017. Especially, it is highly evaluated for its achievements in the current situation where the external environment is difficult due to COVID-19.

Sehwa Seafood, which started as Sehwa Fisheries in 1978, has processed and sold various aquatic products, and has been focusing on seaweed products since the 1980s. Currently, more than 20 types of seaweed products such as snack seaweed and seaweed are exported to more than 100 countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, Canada, and Japan. 95% of all products are for export.

Along with this, Sehwa Seafood, which recently opened a large-scale factory in Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, plans to start full-scale operation from next year and it has a plan to achieve the top performance of exports of 20 million dollars by developing and producing new products using Nakdong seaweed and Musan seaweed.

For this plan, the comany is preparing not only organic certifications in the US and Europe, but also Kosher certification (Certification given to foods that have undergone procedures in accordance with Jewish law) following Halal certification (Certification given to food that Muslims can eat or use).

Mr. Bae said, "Most other fishery resources are limited, but seaweed is a resource that can be made domestically from raw materials to production. Even in difficult situations due to COVID-19, we want to contribute to economic development by researching and developing competitive seaweed products."

Mr. Bae graduated from the Fisheries Management Department of Pukyong National University (Formerly known as National Fisheries University of Busan) in 1971 and received a master's degree in the same department in 1974. He was awarded the Order of Industrial Service Merit and the Grand Prize in technology section of Busan Industrial, and is currently the Chairman of the Korea Fishery Trade Association (KFTA). <Pukyong Today>
